clean the contacts on your battery, remove both clamps and clean the battery lugs and the inside of the clamps with sand paper. remember to retighten the clamps good and tight. if this fails check your battery health and alternator as they are always the usual suspects in winter time.

Hi - I've just read through a number of the other responses to questions and wonder if anyone might be able to help. I recently bought an N Reg Fiat Punto - week later it wouldn't start. I have had a friend take a quick look and he has said it is the immobiliser in the key and I'll need to get a new one - all good so far, but as I haven't got a master was quoted over £1000 for this - so that's not happening! Does anyone know if the immobiliser can be disabled or any other suggestions as to what the problem might be. Also does anyone know where the diagnostic port might be located on the car - thought if that was plug in and checked might confirm if it is the immobiliser. Thanks

Theres thousands of words written on Fiat keys and immobiliser, so the answer is out there. First check what friend has said:- Turn on ignition, wait 5 secs, does the key code light come on, then go off?. No = immo problem. Yes = some other problem.Immo problem: Most likely power supply to ECU or immo. Check under the relay cover on bulkhead. Clean all connections around fuse/s, relay/s, any wiring or connectors, then do it again, just to be sure. If its other problem, report back. Just for the record, the key/s do not go faulty and anyway the master key will not help you with the current problem. T

hi there, does anyone know?.......if this relay that has been mentioned is constantly clicking like crazy, is it likely to be broke? or could it be recieving wrong messages from the ECU? it stops when you try to turn the engine over but there is no sign of the starter motor attempting to turn. it bump starts fine, runs fine, and I have fitted a brand new battery. thanks in advance for any help.

hi.. i wonder if anyone could help.. im new to this and not quite sure how to work it. i recently bought a car from a garge a punto active 12 2004, i had the car for about 4 days, then the engine began not to stat. i sent the car back to where i got it from, where they had it for 2 days and told me to come collect it, after cleaning everything up, they said it was working, i went to drive off same problem it just wouldn,t start. They then said they changed the immobosiler (can't spell), i went to drive off wouldnt start again.. They then said they had some sensor's changed on the crankshaft.. The car was returned to me, but failed to start up, once it finally did, the engine managment light stayed on, and for the last week i have been recording everything that has been happening. Some days it will start up straight away some days it wont, and then the engine managment light will stay on. Also whilst driving the symbol with a car and lock has come on a few times also before i took it back last time my power steering light was also coming on and off. and finally yesterday the car whilst i had the engine on parked up for 2 min cut off and wouldnt start for a gurd 30 min. could some pleaseee help me or give me some advice. The garage i bought it from said to take it back and there gona try a new battery..

I'd have brought it back to the garage and demand a refund .......... they sold you a piece of junk, maybe they could reuse / sell all the new parts they fitted. Good luck......... buy a nice little Japanese car most reliable ( Toyota - Honda etc ).

if you take your car to fiat and get a proper diagnostic test they will pinpoint the problem, you should be able to find your nearest fiat dealer on the net or in the yellow pages, when you have the proper diagnosis you can take it to the garage that sold you the car and then they should be able to sort it. most garages do not have the facilities to diagnose fiats with any accuracy and that is why when things look as bad as yours its the best option to use your fiat dealer. i personally would suspect the ecu as all the symptoms point to it. as for people telling you to buy other makes of car it really is the luck of the draw with second hand cars no matter what the make, i have owned a punto mk1 for the last five years and i can guarantee they are cheaper to keep than a volvo or any jap car.

Buying a second hand car is only down to luck if you dont know what your looking at....... get a qualified mechanic with at least a few years experience to go with you, not a handyman. This way you can calculate the cost of any minor repairs that might be required. Still say you can't beat the japs.

when you say it wont start do you mean the engine turns over but wont start or is the starter motor not turning the engine over?
