Hi Abi
I have a Jhonson 25hp twin 2 stroke, every so often when at full speed it cut out and will only tick over.
If I take it out of gear and slowly incress the engines speed at about 1/2 speed it starts to pulse. ir rev and cut out, rev and cut out, untill I reduce the engines speed. after a short while on tick over the problem goes away, and i can once again go at full speed. Unfortuatly the problem is intermittent. Any ideas.

Regards Andrew

Hi paul mercury made several types of 3.5hp i will assume for the moment that it is the tohatsu build engine where the cowling is screwed to the engine! If this is the case the engine could date from mid 80's and tell tale is located on the block just rear of the cylinder head,or midway down the leg there are a couple of drillings where a fine mist is present while engine is running.hope this helps if not please email me back with a serial number that way can find the exact model for you.regards ab

THE COWL COMES OFF BY UNDOING THE FUEL CAP THEN THERE IS 2 CLIPS INSIDE THAT JUST PULL OFF. NO SCREWS. THERE IS A NO. 6458105. THERE ARE 2 LINES OF 5 HOLES HALF WAY DOWN THE SHAFT. ALSO WHAT MIXTURE SHOULD IT RUN ON.

Hi paul Its not a problem you can ask as many questions as you like thats why i am here :).The best rule of thumb with all outboards is to run them at 50:1 if you are unsure,if you were to make a mistake measuring the oil at 100:1 you would have an engine failure very quickly.I do reccomend that you buy a good quality tcw3 spec oil.All manufacturers make a very good grade of oil but my personal preference is quicksilver range of lubes.I hope this helps regards

Hi abi

Its that time of year to clean the boat and maintain the engine.
Have you any ideas as to what could cause my Johnson 25hp twin to cut-out to tick over when at full or near full speed. If I leave it to tick-over for a short time it will then return to full speed for a time before cutting out again. Very annoying as only will do it under load (on the boat as sea) and not on land under test.

Please any help?

regards Andrew

Hi andrew,as usual with getting the boat out of storage all the gremlins rear their heads.First thing you should do is assertain you have a good spark to the plugs and that the compression is good both cylinders should be over 100psi and within 15psi of each other. It sounds to me as though you have a fuel problem it may be worth checking the obvious to start with ie fuel lines from tank to engine and the lines inside the engine.I suspect that the problem lies within the carb itself as when fuel is left for a while 2-3 moonths it starts losing its properties aswell as gumming up.This is caused by the fuel evaporating then leaving the oil to solidify and in extreme cases cover the main jet restricting fuel flow. The reason that there appears to be no problem when testing the engine in a tub is purely the fact that the engine is not being put under any load so the pistons are running freely without having to work.(I have seen 2 cyl engines with 1 cyl blown appear to run ok untill put under load)I hope this helps you but as with all things if you are not sure please ask your local marine dealer to find and rectify the fault especially where the fuel system is concerned.
regards abi
