Zafira cuts out

It is fine on short runs, a couple of miles at a time, school runs etc but being that it has happened on the motorway twice, I am not happy about using it being that I have small schildren in the car. I am going to take it into a garage but wondered if anyone has any idea what the problem could be? AA said car has automatic cut out when something is wrong to protect the engine but the engine management light only comes on when it cuts out. Anyway, I hope someone has some advice before I take it into the garage because they have a habit of changing things that don't need changing! Thanks for your time Kelly
