Head Gasket Failure

My experience only owner - Feb 2002 Land Rover Freelander 2.5 V6 ES Auto, full service history, car did approx 1000+ since last ersvice - 36,000+ on the clock. Whilst driving I experienced the smell of burning and observed some smoke coming from around the exhaust area of the car - on observation ther were no fluctuations of the temperature gauge. I phoned Lancaster garage - Land Rover Dealer - informed them of the problems - they told me that I could bring the car in that afternoon, they could not determine what the problem could be nor did they advise me further over the phone. I then drove the freelander 15+ miles to the garage. Following assessment of my freelander was told that the news was not good - that I had a leak - the coolant was virtually empty - without stripping down to the engine they were unable to tell me how much damage had been done. Advised that damage could be head gasket @ £1,800 or engine @ £3,500. No courtesy car was available and they told me to get me home they would top up the water levels - THAT IT WAS OK TO DO - that I needed to keep an eye on the water and oil levels WHICH THEY HAD TOPPED UP. This I did following which I arranged for my car to be to be booked in and then drove it in. I have now been informed that the car requires a new engine @ £4000 - Lancaster approached Land Rover customer services - they will pay 25% of the total bill which = £1,000. Can anyone please advise - Lancaster sales have advised my freelander will be worth £3,500 repaired or £250 as it is!!
