Hi all, I am trying to establish a few facts about Landrover defender td5,
did the ealier td5 engines suffer any particular engine problems? , I know the freelander did. My partner and I have a Landrover Defender td5 and are having some expensive problems with this car, however we have not heard of any thing bad about this particular model, ours was first registered Dec 2002 and has completed 77000 miles, can any one help with our enquiry, many thanks.

JRW .

No there is nothing major which has happened to the Td5 like what has happened to the kseries headgasket problems .

Thing that do stand out are - the oil pump gear bolts came loose and lost oil pressure .

Cylinder head configurations are complicated with high pressure fuel lines within the head , these can cause probs , leak and fill the sump up with diesel .

Injector faults .

Turbo faults .

Engine management faults .

Can you tell me what has happened to yours

Hi, thanks for reply, our defender has a big end that decided its had enough, I have not heard of this kind of damage to a td5 engine before and of course it out of second hand warrantee (60,000 miles) ours is now at 77,000 miles . The current charge at a main dealer would be £4.250, we are lucky in as much as we now have the car booked into our local pro mechanic who is as they say a very nice man.

Hi,
regards Landrover defender td5 engine at 77.000 miles, we have discovered that one of the con rod bolts was loose which caused the engine to seize-up, we are having the crank checked by an independant engineer to see if the crank can be saved. As far as the engineer can tell so far, the oil-ways were not blocked up which would I think confirm that the con-rod bolt was indeed loose. Generally speaking the materials used for the td5 engine seems to be of poor qaulity, the design is not good, the old series 3 engines were much better, what are Landrover up to?

JRW .

This is an extremely uncommon problem with this engine , the engine is general is a good engine , i have had very little mechanical problems in 6 yrs of experience with this engine .

There maybe an underline problem which has resulted in the problem ......... hope they get to the bottom of it .
I would still double check that the oil pump gear bolt hasnt come loose though !!

Thanks for your interest regards the Landrover td5 engine. Our man has curently stripped the unit and so far has not found a problem with the pump, however, we will have to wait a little longer to get his findings, at the moment the con-rod loose bolt still seems to be the culprit, I will keep you posted, thank you for your interest.
