Disagree - if you want to race seriosly maybe - but for cruising 2 up is fine - just plan ahead a bit.

Hi all

I am looking to make our Sigma easier to sail with two people . At present when you are on the wheel it is difficult the manage the main sheet . My question is has anyone set their Sigma up so the helm can manage the main sheet and how have they run the lines

Thanks in advance

I second Roger's (CANDIDA) view. Diane & I just returned this afternoon from week's cruising on the California coast from San Francisco to Monterey and back. We had everything from motoring in no wind, to 20-mile beats in light winds, to a spinnaker run in 8 knots that became 15 knots, to running across San Francisco Bay in 25 knots of wind making eight knots over the ground. All with just the two of us.

But it is a big, powerful boat. We try to remember that in cruising mode in the ocean, it's not how much sail you can carry, but how little you can get away with.

A crew that works well together and knows the boat is better than a bunch of gorillas off the beach. A good autopilot and a reliable engine are two other necessities.

For racing we sail with anywhere from 4 to 8 people, of whom half have to know what they are doing and one or two need to be big and strong.

Just found this thread. Have had S41 since 1996 but must sell for family reasons. Wonder did you buy ? Absolutely superb boat updated and refurbished annually. Not raced in my ownership and set up for cruising on my own and/or with my wife. If still looking I can email details.

I am interested in the Sigma 41 for a single handed South Pacific cruise. I also own a 48 foot Hans Christian under contract for sale (32,000 lbs. and 48 foot), which I can single hand and do often. What do you think about single handing the Sigma 41, with both autopilot and a wind vane? I get get around marinas and in tight spots well.

They are a well found very strong boat and do not see any problems singlehanding with a vane and a pilot.

That was my surmise. Anything should be easy after a full keel, large Hans Christian that hates to back at all.

I noticed you said you singled handed your Sigma 41 at least much of the time. My question is how? I am considering the purchase of a Sigma 41 for single handing and the problem I see to single handing is the primary winches are so far forward of the wheel and not even close to it. How do you manage if, say, your autopilot went out (as autopilots like to do)?

Am in the process of buying a Sigma 41 but have found extensive teak deck wear which requires to be replaced, am assuming deck underneath is not damaged. Has anyone replaced thier teak deck and can they offer guidance as to what was found, what needed to be changed and anyother hints and tips they discovered during the process.

Also, great to see there is a place for Sigma 41 owners.

I haven't replaced mine, but I have redone all the black goo in the seams. The teak is merely a shet of thin veneer over an ordinary non-skid deck. It appears to me that the actual deck is solid fiberglass without a core, but I am not sure.

Ted,

Thanks for this, if I remember correctly you need to treat the teak prior to using the sikaflex. Mine is actually springing just in front of the shrouds which suggests that the marine ply the teak is laid on (which is laid onto a GRP balsa sandwich) has blown. The estimate I have for the side deck is circa £6k to £10k. This is using 8mm teak.

Hi Wayne and Sue,

Need to replace the for'd hatch windiw, how did the polycarbonate work? Assume it had to be fairly thick to prevent flexing when people stood on it, what thickness did you use and what guidance could you offer?

Many thanks.
