I have a spare square of the rubber material which I can measure and send .jpg of to anybody who requires.
I would agree with Ron.

Hi,
My little rigging book says, wooden masts have wood wedges (partners) and alloy masts have rubber chocks fitted exactly as Ron says.

Rubber chocks it is then. Just the matter of how to replicate them now. I suppose I could speak to rigging/spar people about the material options then if I had the dimensions I could maybe make some kind of a mould or shape something to fit. This kind of thing must happen with plenty of other boats. So yes Ron/David some dimensions and/or pictures would be useful.
As to any other information you have Ron I would be interested in anything you've got.

Hi Simon,

As I said Graphix will be going soon but I will get measurements and pics for you in a couple of days. After I stopped racing, most of the mods I did were for cruising. If you want general list which may be useful. Topics include the renovation of the teak decks, fitting new and resiting the fridge gear, fridge insulation, engine rebuild, Autohelm fitting and maintenance, P bracket change, keel removal and refit, new mast, heavier boom, gas strut, lazy jacks, full battened main, changing the window material, epoxying the bottom, electric systems etc! In 18 years the list is forever and almost everything on the boat has been out or worked on. If I can help with anything I will.

Regards,

Ron Winn

Its sad that you are leaving us - but all the info you have will be invaluable to us and our successors.
As you will have seen Shawn and others are hoping to put up a website with info on it - would you be willing to let me or Shawn have your email address so that we could get your info onto the site?

Hi All
Well we have got the decks back on and worth all the hard work, we used the old timber and it came up like new, we also did the cockpit area, can give advise if any one is thinking of doing the same.
Good Sailing,
Francis.

Simon --

Here is the web address where I bought my mast wedges -- six large and six small. I used all but one or two.

http://www.RigRite.com

I probably should have bought some of the "wedges with flange," but I didn't. Sometimes I have to double one large and one small. Seems to work, and the mast stays put.

Our boat has an aluminum mast step, and while I have the mast out for new paint and rod rigging, I need to paint the step. Has anyone done it and had it last for long?

Our mast step is painted - but not sure what with as it was done by the previous owner - I suspect it is a two part epoxy paint, as it is very hard and seems to have survived well now for a few years.

Welcome - we seem to be getting bigger and bigger - seems like a good idea to do the Round the Island Race in June next year - anyone else for that?

Dear all

June next year sounds good.

One extra Sigma 41 joining: "Jan Steen", lying in Medemblik, the Netherlands.

We bought our Sigma in 2001 and sailed around the N-Atlantic in 2002-2003. Last year we had to choose between either selling the boat or start doing some serious maintenance. The latter is the outcome. This winter we replaced the deck. Going forward I will certainly need your expert opinions with regard to rigging, instruments and hull maintenance.

Before posting this message one short question: do you know about other Sigma's that tend to lean to starboard?

Regards
Hidde

Hidde,
The mine is also leaning on starboard,
I'l mesure the hull in three weeks and i'l look the position of the keel.
But this boat was designed for IOR and the small first degrees of leaning were important to have a best rating. On starboard we have the tank of gazole and the batteries... ?

Roger,
June next year seems OK for many friends ! And after that, why not Cowes-Dinard.(cool ! )
May be, it would be possible to know where are the others S 41 during the summer to meet them.
J-Pierre.

Shawn (Black adder) and I are working on getting a list of known 41's, owners, locatiion and if possible email addresses.

So if anyone else reads this, and is interested please let us know an email address and we will keep you posted.
Currently I have a list of about 25 boats, 20 names and about 6 email addresses!

Roger

FAYAWAY also lists slightly to stbd. Our fuel tank is on the centerline, but four of the five batteries and the 'LectraSan are on the stbd side.

We can almost level the boat by adjusting the amount of water in the tanks when we are day-racing. I don't know whether doing so is worth the extra weight of the water required, as opposed to racing with both tanks nearly empty.

Over the years we have replaced most moving parts on the boat except the rudder and its bearings, and now I am thinking about them. Has anyone ever lost a rudder? Has anyone looked at the bearings or the internal structure of the rudder itself? How does one inspect those bearings? How big a job is it to get the rudder off, and once you do, is there a not-too-destructive way to determine whether the internal metal structure might be failing?
