Andy, Thanks for the message - apologies for the late reply.

Good to know about the fully battened main. I was tending that way but was worried about the track! We will follow up with Daryl/Doyle sails.

On the keel I will dig out the info, but from memory it was about £8000 from Irons Brothers in the west country (Plymouth?). Osmotech at HPM did all the work and I will check how much we paid for the work. Of course you will have to take the mast down. We therefore replaced the standing rigging at the same time. Also in my experience all the electronics never works first time after restepping a mast, so make sure you test everything fully before sign off with the yard.

Sam

Hello to Everyone,
I just purchased a Sigma 41 today! It's in Michigan and will be stored on its cradle until Spring when we'll sail her back to Wisconsin. The boat was surveyed and had some issues, including some delamination of the teak deck (hopefully repairable), poor fairing requring some grinding and re-application by someone who knows what they're doing, and the biggest concern is the strut for the propeller has cracked after it has been refiberglassed. Marina thinks this might be either an alignment issue or a faulty cutlass bearing/shaft. Any ideas? This is a great place, I will spend the winter going through the archives.
Thanks for having this!
Rick

There has been talk for many months about moving this group to our own website, but nothing has come of it. I have established a group on GMail entitled Sigma 41 Sailors, http://groups.google.com/group/sigma-41-sailors

It has a number of advantages, including the ability to organize posts by thread and the ability to send all the posts for a single day in a single email. Please take a look at it and think about whether such a move would be a good idea. I have no pride of authorship and don't care one way or the other. I'll close it down if people don't think its better, for there is no point in having two.

We have a made an interesting improvement to FAYAWAY. Long before we bought the boat in 2000, the icebox had been converted to refrigeration. The drain was plugged with some kind of goo that kept the cold air from flowing out, but the metal drain fitting remained in place. We got an indication how much “cold” we were “losing” when we realized that there was condensation continuously on the tailpiece of that drain fitting, and it was always very cold to the touch.

After deciding that removing the icebox and either rebuilding it or replacing it were beyond my abilities as a carpenter, I decided to remove the drain fitting. I simply cut it out with a hole saw and pulled it and its hose up out of the box. Then I bought a disc of Plexiglas that overlapped the hole, epoxied it down inside the box and filled in the insulation from below with a spray can of foam.

We have been having a cold snap, so it is hard to tell how much of the reduction in electricity consumption is due to low ambient temperatures and how much to this change, but I suspect we will see a reduction of between 1/3 and ½ in power consumption by the refrigerator.

An excellent side benefit is elimination of condensation and resulting water in the bilge.

It looks like the Google alternative is entirely up to speed yet, therefore I continue on Preloved for now.

We decided to replace our hank-on genoa system for a Furlex or alike. Does any of you have suggestions and/or indication concerning prices for furl system and new genoa?

Many thanks and Happy New Year

Hi There,

I have contacted some of you to find Sigma 41 plans for a friend by mail. Thank's to the ones who made a reply.

I'm on the way to post the collected documents on my blog. As far as my english is not too good and you may have some other "public documents" to share with other Sigma 41 owners, and to add to the blog article; I have written a test note you can read on URL http://ldmtest.blogspirit.com/archive/2007/01......great-boat.html . Please have a look and let me know your comments.

Best regards and happy new year to all of you.

Nam

Jim,

In behind the main switch panel at the nav station you should find a small plastic box with about 8 fuses in it. these fuses are for the lighting system. The wires on "hideaway" are red and yellow.

S41s are not a rare breed at all. The were over 120 built of which 60% were M/H witn the balance being fractional. A few were speced with an extra metre on the mast to siut IMS ratings. Ha dthe interior been better built they would now be a classic as they are probably one the best sea boats ever built. I had one for 5 years and adored her.

I am considering adding an inner forestay, as we are converting FAYAWAY to long-term cruising mode. The idea is to add a non-overlapping, hanked-on blade on the inner forestay for rough weather and windward slogging offshore, and keep the foller-furled 125% jib on the real forestay for reaching and very light conditions.

The rig is fractional with running backstays. I would make the inner forestay as long as possible, in the hope that the exsting running backstays will provide enough support for the new attachment point.

The inner forestay will be a couple of feet lower than the existing hounds, where the runners attach. Does anyone know how close the attachment point for the running backstays needs to be to the inner forestay attachment point to provide adequate support for the loads on the inner forestay?

Has anyone anchored an inner forestay on the bulkhead between the chain locker and forward cabin, and if so, how did you do it?

Inner forestay.
I installed one of these on Big Doris, (now Dorothea and in Trini). Brilliant sucess. I had a pair of stainless plates made up onre of which went the full width of the bulkhead at the aft end of the chain locker. The other became a backing plate in the forepeak This made for a very robust fitting for the inner forestay and I sailed her as a cutter for 3 years. Adrian and Anna Biggs continue to do so. This put the inner star tack 1/3 aft of the stem. All worked out v well. Doris is mast head so the rig is v. different to yours so a serious chat to seldon may be best to determin the top fitting.

Hi Ted,
Thinking of doing the same myself, apparently the thing is to stow the stay at the mast and set it up on a highfield lever when reqd. according to the advice I have recevd. you must support a fractional rig (as we have), at the point of the stays connection to the mast. The deck arrangement suggested seems perfectly reasonable to me.

Ifield levers. Used to have one on a Sigma 362. Now have a Dehler 39 with a threaded tensioner. Connect it up then turn the wheel to put tension on. This works much better than the old lever did, cheaper too.

To all

Any chance one of you has the measures for a furling genua II? I have a mast head (~18 meters) rig.

Many thanks.

Jim --

Thanks. So far so good. Do you remember the name or address of the store even the name of the town where you bought the base?

Are there any special tricks for getting the old one off?

Thanks.

Hi Ted

If you go on to http://www.spencerrigging.co.uk and email them they would be able to tell you - I got one from them about 4 years ago - also stanchions - I think the make was oroginally SSS or something similar.
