Hi Roger.

Thanks to everyone for there responses.

I am based in Liverpool, I use the boat for teaching RYA sailing courses around the Clyde area, so being able to dispense with the back stays would be great for the students.

As you can see from the replies to my question, there is a difference of opinions between owners.

Is the report you have available online.

Regards

Rob.

I've removed mine too for similar reasons. No noticeable difference although if I was heading into an ocean crossing, I'd probably put them back on if no other reason than to have that extra bit of suport.
Currently on the hard in Lagos - work on boat next week - and going back up to Galicia in may.
Cheers
David

Afraid it is an old print out - if you give me an email I could maybe post a copy.
Probably worth talking to Shawn Plummer )Black adder) as he uses her for school and charter work also (completed last Fastnet without runners by the way!)

We are on E36 - but sadly I am at home at the moment - and due out on May 11/12 will you still be there?
Yard did some serious work to the boat over the winter and I was really impressed.

Hi,
I spoke to Julian Berney who both races and ocean cruises his fractional Sigma 41, Houdalinqua and he tells me that he has long considered that runners are not necessary to hold up the mast in view of his swept back spreaders. However he does find them useful going to windward for best performance so to kep the weight down has replaced them with dyneema and has also raised the height of the blocks so that the blocks and the boom don't interfere with each other.
My Sigma 41 is masthead and has been converted (with input from David Thomas) to cutter rig. The runners are useful when bashing to windward under just the staysail and reefed main but to be honest, even with this modified rig the mast stays pretty much in column and doesn't sem to pump if I leave them untensioned.

Hello Rob.I have a S41 in Greece .I was a member of LYC and am often at Liverpool Marina when I am home.If it would not be a problem I would like to look at the plumbing for your forward heads. The previous owner of my boat took the toilet out and binned it when he was in the Caribbean and around Florida.I think he used a Porte Potti in the Intra coastal because American Regs forbid raw sewage being discharged.I look forward to meeting you.Jim

Re Runners:

We have an extra-tall fractional rig -- the luff of the main is 54.2' long. We have kept the runners for racing, for extra stability in the ocean and because I like to pull strings when we are just sailing around. (They are also useful for bending the mast when attaching or detaching the fixed backstay.) Like a lot of people we replaced the wire with high-tech, low-stretch, low-weight line and the turning blocks for the tails with Harken lightweight runner blocks. We have sailed 11,000 miles in the last 18 months, and I am sure the runners are not needed to hold the mast up. In fact, we release them both before a jibe.

Speaking of jibing, we have tamed the 18' long boom when jibing in almost any conditions by the use of preventers. We wrap a sail tie around the boom at the vang attachment point, and tie in a line leading to the toe rails and back to the cockpit on both sides. We handle them on the spinnaker sheet winches. ( With just two of us, we never jibe with the spinnaker up if there is anything more than a zephyr.)

We suspect that we need to replace our cutlass bearing and would like to have the right bearing on hand before beginning the haulout. Can anyone tell us the size and type of the cutlass bearing?

Hi Roger,
hope all is well with you and "Candida" -sounds like you are back up and running.
Without compromising any issues your side, evidently something quite bad happened to the boat to stop your plans last year. are you able to divulge details to the forum yet?
"Scehawk" is due to come back across and do the AZAB 2011 (any other takers?) and it would be good to know if I need to keep an eye on anything in particular.
Have a great sailing summer meantime
all the best
Jon

Hi Jon

The problems were caused by a bad repair done in 2004 - arounf the back of the keel - this has now been properly repaired and the lay-up re built and she is now as good as (or even better than) new.

The other problem was that the rudder stock sleeve was allowing water in - solution longer sleev that finishes above the waterline!

Now she is all dry and cosy again!

Ted - just seeing your query about cutless bearing sizes. Probably you have already got the info., but anyway IO just measured one that I took out - outside diam 44.67mm = 1.759 inches; Length 127mm = 5 inches.

Hi Roger
Thanks for that, did it mean you had leakage from around the aft end of the keel into the yacht? Clever idea for the rudder stock cheers Jon

Yes it was purely the result of a botched repair - so not something that would be a normal problem - don't lose sleep about it!
