Cheers David
Hi Jim Nice to hear from you. Hope you had a good trip over to Greece and no regrets. Moved the boat last year from Corinth area to near Spetsai. John
I will send more details upon return.
Candida is currently in Lagos - having aborted our Atlantic trip in the autumn due to surgery required to both boat and my back. Thanks
I am the lucky purchaser of a Sigma 41 called Sarah Mercedes. Bought her in October and have sailed about 2000 miles since. Great boat. A question I would like to ask is what exactly do the running back stays do. Are they additional support for the mast, are they to tension the forestay, are they to bend the mast, are they for when flying a spinnaker or just to get in the way when tacking and gybing. Thanks
The running backstays are the main support for the mast the backstay is mainly used for tensioning the forestay and bending the mast although in the Sigma the backstay will take a gybe on it's own. Apart from that they sure get in the road. Jim
I have test report in which David Thomas explains that the rig is designed to stand and be used in the same way as the 33, and that the runners are there to tension the forestay - mainly for racing. Roger
Thanks to everyone for there responses. I am based in Liverpool, I use the boat for teaching RYA sailing courses around the Clyde area, so being able to dispense with the back stays would be great for the students. As you can see from the replies to my question, there is a difference of opinions between owners. Is the report you have available online. Regards Rob. I've removed mine too for similar reasons. No noticeable difference although if I was heading into an ocean crossing, I'd probably put them back on if no other reason than to have that extra bit of suport. Currently on the hard in Lagos - work on boat next week - and going back up to Galicia in may. Cheers David INTRIGUE
Candida was in Sopromar over the winter and now in the marina going out about 12/5 probably heading north also! Roger
Afraid it is an old print out - if you give me an email I could maybe post a copy. Roger
Yes, I'm in Sopromar too - by the back gate. Will be down Mon thru Fri am., so maybe a 'glass of water' in Souths. Which Marina finger are you on ? Cheers David.
We are on E36 - but sadly I am at home at the moment - and due out on May 11/12 will you still be there? Yard did some serious work to the boat over the winter and I was really impressed. Roger

I spoke to Julian Berney who both races and ocean cruises his fractional Sigma 41, Houdalinqua and he tells me that he has long considered that runners are not necessary to hold up the mast in view of his swept back spreaders. However he does find them useful going to windward for best performance so to kep the weight down has replaced them with dyneema and has also raised the height of the blocks so that the blocks and the boom don't interfere with each other. My Sigma 41 is masthead and has been converted (with input from David Thomas) to cutter rig. The runners are useful when bashing to windward under just the staysail and reefed main but to be honest, even with this modified rig the mast stays pretty much in column and doesn't sem to pump if I leave them untensioned.
