Ted,

Do you still want to use a Sigma for September, can let you have Blackadder, not sure can take up option of return until 2006 though, would this be a problem?

Boat is high spec, and coded to MCA for chartering, there are all lifejackets and foul weather gear onboard etc, so you can travel light.

Apologies for not getting the rod steering photo's to you do you still need?

Best regards.

Shawn.

I have recently bought a Sigma 41.Thank you for the opportunity to communicate with other owners.I found a 1982 magazine review of the Sigma in the ships paperwork and it seems quite favourable. We also seem to list to starboard but I feel a lot of that is caused by the "junk" in the cockpit locker. With a bit of judicious discrimination much of the heel can be eliminated. My fridge,Isotherm and I think original, works but seems to be on for very long periods of time,I assume it may want regassing. The boat is located in the Med.I look forward to reading and rereading the mail. Many thanks,Jim

Ours also lists to stdb, I think becasue all the batteries are under the nav seat and the navigator's bunk. We control it a little bit by using the stbd water tank first.

Hi Jim
Yes I think all 41s seem to list to stbd - we have a holding tank where where the navigator's bunk used to be so that didn't help, nor does the heater - again starboard side (suppose fitting is easier and less hassle from the cockpit locker!
We have moved the batteries to the port side - that made a big difference - also store the kedge and some 10m of chain under the quarter cabin berth. Coupled with keeping the stbd water tank empty most of the time we are about upright now!
Oh yes - also helps to keep the fridge full of beer!

Our fridge is original - it certainly had to work very hard in the tropics - I think really that the insulation etc is aimed at UK rather than warm waters! and to get it to work properly, I fear, means rebuilding the whole thing and putting really good insulation round it - I think the compressor is ok if the box didn't lose so much heat - the line from the compressor to the box got over 1/2 inch of ice on it at times!

Candida,
Thank you for your message. The fridge is said to have packed up when the boat was in the Caribbean, according to the previous owner, but I only turned it on and it worked. It does not get down to any really low temps in the Med but we are grateful for small mercies. Thanks,Jim

Hello Roger et al,
I am getting conflicting information about tankage. The previous owner said the fuel tanks held 40 galls imperial and the water tanks combined hold approx 170 galls imperial. The review I have suggests 35 imp galls for fuel and 85 imp galls for water.I think all the tanks are original. For those who may be interested we have the Yanmar 3 cylinder 36/40hp engine which replaced a turbo Volvo. The boat was built in 1985.Jim

Jim
I THINK our tank is original, if not it is a dead ringer for it! and that holds 165 litres (I know 'cos it was flat empty when I bought the boat!) which is about 37 Imp Gallons.
The water tanks are new s/s ones (but previous owner said they were direct copy of originals) and hold 185 litres each (say 40 Imp Galls)
We too replaced with the Yanmar 40 last winter which replaced the original Bukh 36.

Roger

Hi,

Just joined the forum.
Have owned Sigma 41 #071, nee Devon Dream for 6 years.
This is my 4th boat, and I absolutely love her. I consider this my definitive boat.
I sail out of the west coast of Florida, and just returned from a race to Mexico.
Am currently rebuilding the Whitlock rack and pinion.

My wife hates the stove, or cooker, a Plastimo Atlantic 2 burner.
Does anyone know of a good replacement that would fit the extremely narrow original cut out?

Hi Jim,
Could you email me the magaxine review or at least the name and date of the publication?

Thanks,
Francois.

We installed a Force 10 "European-size," two-burner propane (LPG) stove. It just fits, and 99 times out of 100, two burners is plenty. A vast improvement.

We are thinking that we would really like an electric winch, not a windlass, but a winch for line handling. Has anyone installed one? What size? Where? How much does the motor intrude below? What do you use it for? Are you satisfied with it?

Hello Ted.We have a Seawolf electric anchor winch,I assume this is the type of thing you are considering. It has two drums, one for chain and one that can be used for rope ,you may have to take the chain off the other drum in case of accidents. It is quite small and fits into the anchor well, you may have to fit a couple of angle irons or flat bars across the well.It is not particularly heavy,I have lifted mine out singlehanded and the locker lid closes without any problem. It can be used, with the appropriate tackle, for lifting your dinghy on board or possibly taking somebody up the mast.
Jim.
If Francois should read this,I am not at my boat at present and may not be there for some time due to my mothers declining health.Good sailing everybody.Jim

Hi
I am in the process of buying av Sigma41. Have been shareowner on the boat and now I buy out the others. The boat is in Turkey and I will sail it home to Norway. There are many things to be done on the boat, but one thing is a real headache: It seems that 2 of the keelbolts have to be changed due to corrosion. Has anyone done that? Does anyone know how they are attached in the keel? The surveyor could not get into contact with any representative of the builder. I'd be glad for some info. Patrick

Patrick, I changed my keel some years ago - a fault in the casting.
The top of my keel is threaded so you should be able to un-screw the damaged ones and insert new (with appropriate sealer)

Hi Thanks for your reply. I am not so stiff in english. What does it mean that the top of the keel is threaded? Does it mean that the bolts are screwed into the keel (som kind of harware in the keel?). Thanks Patrick

Patrick - correct. I thought that I had the name of the keel maker who is based near Plymouth in the UK, but so far cannot find it.
You could also call Northshore Yachts (who carry spares for Sigma 41) on +44 1243 511 473.
Finally, I'll try to get to the boatyard to see if the old keel is still lying around - if it is, I might be able to get you some .jpgs.
Rgds David.
