This doesnt sound good or cheap to be honest . The common problem is that the pinion seal or the drive shaft seals leak , you eventually lose all of the oil within the diff and the diff will literally destroy itself , in severe cases i have known them to throw the driveshafts out , so to be on the safe side dont drive it anywhere get it recovered . The whining noise suggest that the differential is damage - but without some diagnosis you wont know for sure , you maybe lucky and just rectify the reason for oil loss refill with oil and it maybe ok - but my exerience tells me its probably terminal ...... sorry for the bad news !!

Put it up on blocks so you have all four wheels off the ground. Start it up & put it in gear, listen for what is noisy to determine that it is the diff & not the gearbox or propshaft. Turn the back wheel by hand & feel/ listen for anything abnormal. With one back wheel off the ground turn back & forth is there lods of play & does the pinnion/prop jump up & down at the pinnion oil seal. Disconnect the propshaft, it's only four bolts. Turn the pinnion by hand back & forth, there should be virtually no play in it. If lots of play then you need a replacement diff. A second hand one is not going to cost much & it is very easy to do your self.
