We certainly aren't going to improve the situation by carrying on breeding with animals we can't be 100% sure about their genetic make up. And yeah shelters would still need to exist but sooner or later we will be able to enforce laws and control over horrible people who do abandon or neglect their pets. We would be able to put a stop to all breeding so that we can carry out tests so we know which dogs are pure breeds and have a good bloodline and which ones have been bred with cousins and grandparents (yuck!) so we know which dogs to use and which not.

Sorry lol. I am not against crossbreeds but I don't think it should be done on purpose. I love mongrels and mish mashes but its not special or unique if theres always puppies in the paper every week with different stupid names....I mean really, a Pugapoo?

My great grandmother used to breed dogs, she bred pekes and shih tzus as well as something else which I can't remember but she used to cross shih tzus with the pekes to bring the pekes' snout out so it would be healthier. This is what needs to happen with dogs. Look in the adverts on here and there is a staffie cross bull dog and a dogue du bordeux cross bull dog. Both of these look more like the original bull dop because their snouts have been brought forward. If we breed for the healthy traits then problems with the breeds will decrease and we can check if they are in bred by getting the pedigree off the breeders of the dogs and the dogs parents and their parents. The only time any kind of in breeding should be allowed is when the relation is distant so the chances of passing on defective genes is incredibly low.

I dont see any point to inbreeding at all - i couldnt believe that its actually allowed and approved of by the KC. In this day and age?! Surely there are enough of their breed to carry on the lines without mixing family members?! In my complete ignorance it wasnt even something i've ever thought about - and yet seems commonplace amongst breeders.

A mongrel is a dog of no definable type or breed, where as a first cross dog is definable. To give the dog a generic name like Cockerpoo, Westipoo, Labradoodle, Yorkipoo etc etc is a great way of identifying it. If the same system had been adopted ages ago we'd have no problem identifying all those other crosses you prefere to call pedigree dogs. Am I to believe that any one can be so shallow that they're prepared to write of crosses as unacceptable simply because they don't like the name?

Any breeding should be closely monitored and controlled, with people on registers, dogs and bitches being neutured to prevent any unlawful pregnancies because I see what you mean about breeding out problems in breeds. But the whole point is that we can't trust the KC now because so many are mating dogs here there and everywhere and don't know what they're doing, although the claim they do.
But your proposing to mate a HUGE big boned dog with a MEDIUM big boned dog (lets pray neither has joint problems in the family) and you think this is the solution?
If we stop breeding, do a bloodline test i.e. dna etc then we know which dogs to breed together. Although we don't need to breed at all, shelters are full of youngsters!

Sorry recue dogs are for some but not others,a family with very small children should opt for a puppy as they know what they are getting and it will adapt to there way of life better.

i dont agree with that, you dont HAVE to get a puppy when you have small kids, and you cant always tell what a puppy will be like, you can make an educated guess based on the parents but it is still a guess. we got our lurcher when he was around 5 from a rescue center who told us he was found dumped after travellers had been moved on. we only had 2 kids then but they were only 3 and almost 2 years old. he has always been fantastic, never growled or snarled and has been one of the most patient dogs i have even met. i admit my kids were particularly good, they have always known not to torment an animal and to respect them so they didnt pull him around as some little uns may have but i would definitely say to anyone with or without kids to get an adult rescue. there could be the perfect dog for someone stuck in a rescue center but they dont think they should get one and opt for a pup instead. i do agree though that not all people are suited to rescue dogs, it takes a certain kind of person to rescue and some people arent up to it

it is nice to experience pups but to say people with young kids should only get pups is wrong. i dont mean to ram rescues down peoples throats and i'm not against pups, our collies were both bought as pups from farms and it was lovely to have a pup in the house again after having my 'oldies' but i would just as soon get a ten year old dog as a ten week old. we were lucky with jack and i will always be glad we got him, he's my babe :-)

now, you didnt specify big breeds, you just said pups, and i agree it is important with these breeds to know their background and when possible raise them with kids, BUT.. raising a dog with kids no matter what its breed is no guarantee it will be good with kids when an adult, there are many cases well documented where loving family pets have turned on their owners, not just the rotties and gsd's of the world but also the yappers and a good number of these were brought up in the family by and with the very people they have now turned on. i love all my dogs and i can never see any situation where they would hurt one of my family, but i still wouldnt trust one with a small child alone. to say you would trust your dog with a child is irresponsible, i wouldnt trust child nor dog even though i know on both sides they would never knowingly hurt one another.

Personally i wouldnt get a dog if i couldnt trust it 100%, I think puppies do suit familys better, my parents have always been put off older dogs as in most cases you have to retrain them for example my parents wont let dogs on furniture, or upstairs etc and these days alot of people allow this. I always think a KC dog suits children more as well as you can look at the charecteristics of the breed before buying. I think the worse thing about deigner breeds as to me they all came at once it didnt seem to be a slow introduction to them, it was all of a sudden the next craze and thats a major thing that putme off them, and the fact i dont really like smaller breeds lol I personally would never cross a dog but i would rescue one in a second

Please do not call be irrisposable, would i trust my dog with my grandkids YES would i trust my grandkids with my dog NO,is a phrase,And i also think it is the person on the other end of the lead that is to blame for a lot of these dogs,It strikes me you have an oppinion and no one else can have one,And if they do then yours has to be the correct one.

i'm sorry you feel this way, i'm not saying my opinion is the only one, i'm just giving my opinion. its individual choice whether or not people agree or disagree, i have said before it would be a dull world if we all thought the same :-) my dogs are all 100% and my kids all have the greatest respect for them, they dont pull them or tease them like some kids do but when they were little i still wouldnt have left them alone with any dog, not ours not anyones. nows not so bad, my youngest is 8 and very confident with them, we made sure from the get go that our dogs knew the kids were above them in the pack and we make sure that the dogs dont forget that still. the fact that i wouldnt leave a youngster alone with any dog is no reflection on my dogs temperaments, they are all fantastic dogs, its just common sense.
my beef with 'designer' breeds is that the poor things will be popular for a couple of years but when the latest empty headed celebrity sports a different breed or different accessory they will be surplus to requirements to alot of people and then what do we do with the thousands of them that were bred? i agree people should have freedom of choice but at what cost? you cant deny some people do buy these dogs just because they look good sat in a handbag or they simply like the idea of owning the same breed as their favourite 'it' girl

it is the person on the end of the leads responsibility to ensure that their dog doesnt bite another dog or a person. in almost every case of dog attack it is the owners fault but because of human ignorance someone gets bitten or worse, the dog gets destroyed and the breed gets tarred as a whole as bad. all down to human error.

First of all I didn't suggest crossing one unsuitable dog with another, Ias in a large boned dog with a small dog. I'm trying to suggest a responsible approach to out breeding. As for rescue dogs, its not just children that need to be considered when bringing a strange dog who's temprement can't be gauranteed. I have 3 elderly cats and I wouldn't dream of introducing anything other than a pup. No you cannot be sure your new pup isn't going to attack a child when it becomes an adult dog but you can certainly monitor its behaviour as it grows and during that period if the pup were to show signs of aggression at least the damage would be less severe. As for designer dogs (your term not mine). I get the impression that you recognise them as no more than mongrels so how is anyone else going to recognise them as anything other? Its a strange concept when you start to refer to them as designer. My dog was chosen for many reasons, he has a fantastic character and although he turns plenty of heads no one knows what he is and so of course they dont refer to him as designer. The term is used a lot on this forum by people who seem less interested in dogs and more interested in nit picking.
