I don't agree with breeding cross breeds for profit, However I have 4 dogs, 3 are crosses and they are gorgeous! There tempraments are brill and there so loyal and loving.

I however do hate designer crosses. My friend has a *!#%!@ zhu cross jack russel! a jack *!#%!@! can u believe it!

However I would like to add that the jack russel, staffy and some other breeds were cross breeds and only became kennel club material about 20 years ago so .........

BUT there are breeds that have become extinct because of cross breeding.

So there are good and bad points but breeding just for profit is rediculous!

But I do love my crosses!

I came across this topic and I can't believe how needlessly offensive shatteredmum is being! I agree that the names are very stupid, but I see no problem with someone breeding crosses, they make lovely dogs and not so nice dogs, just the same as pure breeds - it depends on the dog. as for the health issues, crosses are generally stronger as inbred pure breeds have had their weaknesses amplified due to no fresh genes.

Hi some cross breeds can cause serious health problems for generations to come. A good example is a crossing of a chi and a peke ,chi`s are known to have lung probs etc n pekes to have probs with their eyes, this was done in the U.S a few years ago but stopped when the pups were found to have very serious health probs as they grew into adult dogs. Sometimes the problems don`t show till the next generation. I do agree that there is a lot of inbreeding in pure breeds but that is down to unscrupulous breeders. If there was a better register of breeders and more stringent controls this could be reduced some what but probably would not stop it. Asa result of interbredding my chi has major health problems and the bredder has now been banned from keeping dogs never mind breeding them.
1 solution would be to make all breeders register pups and supply documents to prove it, if the owners of the dam n the sire both registered the mating this could be cross referenced so no more pups could be inter bred what I mean is they could not mate a pup from this pairing with any pup from either side .

Yeh, if certain dog breeds are found to have badly dissabled pups than they shouldnt be bred together, as this is kind of a form of animal cruelty. Also if there is a large size difference it can cause complications at birth.
But I meant if someone wanted to breed dogs that werent purebred and didnt have problems, I dont have anything against it, I think they can do what they want as long as they can rear them ok, there are many more important issues in the world to worry about really.

Yep some people can be really irresponsible. I know of lots of strange breeds which are just not practical - why breed large puppies from a small breed dog? It could kill her! Im sure they dont even think about these things..animals are only replaceable pets after all!!! (NOT!)

There are too may 'flamers' here! I thought we were supposed to be discussing dogs. shatteredmum is probably thoroughly enjoying the attention and others seem to have no interest in dogs at all. A pointless discussion to which I will no longer contribute!!

Hello
I seen this discussion ages ago and thought it was quite nasty lol
Arnt most breeds today crossed somewhere down the line like the long haired st bernard was crossed with a newfoundland to get the long coat, and thats just 1 example
It doesnt matter whether its a cross or not you should be looking at its personality and whether the dog makes you happy
dogs sre companion whether they have KC papers or not
My two dogs are pure breeds but only because i no how big they will be and there breeds charecteristics

Hiya, i havent followed this discussion religiously - but i have contributed and just wanted to say that i made references to a labradoodle earlier. I was only referring to the one i know (not the breed) and if that upset anyone then i apologise! I dont disagree with crossbred dogs as such - have grown up with them - but the one i knew personally was an extremely active dog..and not for me! lol I think your points were fair claire - as you sed yourself they still moult even though the breeders claim otherwise, and im sure your dog is absolutely lovely. :-)

I know this was posted a while ago but i think u were being very rude and completly ignorant to kitty, do you have an real training in the Physiology/behaviour or origin of the dog?! do you know how inbred many off these 'pure breeds' are? well i can tell you... extremely!! do you not think that most people who breed pure bred dogs do infact do it for a profiet? how many pure breeds do you see going free to good homes? It's pretty damn rare unless you pick them up from a rehoming center where they get dumped because they are past their breeding or working potential. On the whole most breeders sell their breed for between £200-800+ per pup, some of that money does go towards the general maintenance vaccinations/microchipping etc if you get your pup from an excellent registered breeder. Breeding for any kind of profiet is wrong.

There are just as many dodgey pure bred breeders out there as there are cross breeders. Kitty was also right in the sence that cross breed dogs are generally on the whole healthier because they arnt so inbred.

I think in the future you should stick to things that you know alot about, there is no need for rudeness and ignorance, I find you highly immature.

Hi all, been away for a while but back again.
I think the whole point of this discussion is related to so called 'Designer dogs' and the money hungrey people who breed them.
Crossbreds are at the root of most breeds today. As for health problems look no further than the showing world; they have a lot to answer for! It doesn't matter one bit whether your dog is a pedigree or a bitza, they are all dogs.
We know there are unscrupulous people out there who breed irresponsibly, we know there are some who only look at a dog to access how much the puppies will fetch. They have always been with us and always will.
So can it with all the ranting guys and let's get this discussion back on intelligent lines.

welcome back xleper mayb now sanity will prevail

I only have a problem with "designer" dogs because they are this months must have accessory, cost too much and 9outta 10 will end up in a rehoming centre or similar

Hi Alfie,

Don't they just! Our local RSPCA shelter had quite few the last time I went there (not that I go that often because I want to bring every animal home). When it comes down to it a crossbred is a crossbred whether it be a cockpoo, a chichipoo or a Heinz 57. It's the same in the cat world; how many bengal crosses can there be? With cats it's a little different 'cos if a calling cat wants to get out and party with the boys she'll find a way. And I'm convinced wandering toms all carry concealed crowbars.
I'm not against cross-breeding but I am against irrisponsable breeders and owners. If cross-breeding didn't happen we wouldn't have all the pedigree breeds we have today. All these dogs were bred with a purpose in mind; shepherds, guards, hunting dogs etc but with some of these so-called breeders the only purpose is to make money and the ultimate good of the puppies produced is only secondary. Before everyone starts shouting take a breath and think of some of the ads we've seen here on Preloved. The vast majority love their animals and have only the dogs good in mind but there are a few who obviously don't. And we are never going to change that.
