UMM how dare you say im a backyard breeder, for that comment i gladly invite your holy ness to have a look around my rabbitry, those sizes of hutch are animal shelter guide lines and are complete crap if rabbits wernt alowed to be housed in hutches of that size there would be governemnt legistlation saying so, unlike you who have obviously never bred animals i am informed on rehoming policy, day to day management of an animal shelter having worked in one, all my rabbits are pets in the first instance they are all happy and healthy, if one was to fall ill i would seek medical attention stright away from our full time vet who works on our farm as in on site 24 hours a day so im really irisponcible all my rabbits have constant acsess to fresh water, food and more than basic compforts living on a farm there is a constant supply of bedding they all go out on the lawn and exercise weather permitting, that does are only bred twice a year and NO more I never have mre than one doe in kit at one time and all the money raised from selling goes back into peying for their food, all young that i sell i send with a care sheet and change over food i also stress the responcibilities of rabbit and guinea-pig owner ship to new owners and i never sell guinea-pigs and rabbit together not even if they "say they will be seperate" and i keep in contact with new owners to give additonal advise and will always BUY BACK unwanted rabbits so before you go slagging someone off you need to know the facts first so if you wish to visit my stud you are more than welcome maybe i should add a comments page to my website as ppl always comment to me when they visit (where they can see mum and dad un like in a pet shop) how happy my rabbits look and how friendly and loved they are.

Well all if you said in that message is true, then well done, you obviously care for your rabbits welfare.

However, my comment was regarding that you buy breeding animals from a pet shop. I stated why this is irrisponsible and how you should go about getting breeding animals.

I know breeders, i know ones i would recommend, and ones whom should be reported. I am not biased, but as in your other message you said nothing of the rabbits housing/lifestyle and only that you purchase from a pet shop. Pets at home are well known for purchasing their rabbits in "bulk" from a rabbit farm (like a puppy farm) you can not tell their genetics. You do not know what they may be carriers of.

I never said i always buy all my breeding stock from pets at home i have bought two does, these have been blood tested and pre checked before breeding as are all my breeding does regardless of where i get them (ALL OTHERS HAVE COME FROM WELL ESTABLISHED BREEDERS THAT I HAVE VISITED AND HAVE SEEN THEIR STUDS)

yes you are right i dont know there entire background but regardless even if they have a spotless history supplied with them they could still have a muntated gene which thefore makes them unsuitable for breeding is a chance everyone takes even people procreating.

I dont know why pets at home is such a taboo, i have walked into pet shops for a nose and have openly said to them they are a disgrace i went into one the other week i have passed many times and decided to have a look inside and the dutch bucks they had in there had crusty eyes and snotty noses and were still for sale. At least at pets at home they offer a free health check and to pay for any medical bills that come from that im not saying pet shops are wonderful as it is so much better to buy from a breeder but then there are bad breeders such as puppy farm like run places but i pride myself in selling well reared rabbits with great temperaments i handle my young daily from a week old so they are used to humans and not one will scratch away or bite when they leave

Like i said i would gladly invite you to have a look around my stud im proud of the stock i have and the way in which they are cared for i dont have to justify what i do to anyone, im qualifed to manage animals large and small furry and scaled and like i said i am also experienced with animal shelter work and policy so i know that many of those are far from perfect so i dont really take kindly to ppl that discriminate against breeding rabbits when they dont have a hands on view only one they have been told about, taught at college or uni. Its the animal shelter way to be all save the animals if it wernt for the procreation of animals you wouldnt have a job at the end of the day ok that would be bad for you but great for animals obviously but instead of slagging off anyone that has a hobby including breeding of pet animals you should be praising the ones (like myself) that are doing it properly

I do not consider what i do to be a job. And if there wasnt an enormous overpopulation of rabbits and breeders to the point that there was not a need for rescue centres, then to be honest, i would be happy and relieved.

I do not see creating life as a hobby.

Why Breed And Buy, While Rabbits In Rescues Die.

Please, enlighten me as to what area in the UK you live in and i will see if i can make a visit.

I live in Crediton Devon

you know what if i wanna breed my dutch rabbits as a hobby a non profitable one in which i am going to go into showing of dutch rabbits the i will, what ever you say isnt gunna change that im a little tired of the i am perfect and can do no wrong act,

this discussion was meant to be about what breeds of rabbit in members opinion is best not u trying to do the saintly act face facts you wont stop me or anyone else breeding rabbits

How many hobbies depend on creating life, horse riding, hunting racing etc, pigeon flying, dog showing, cattle showing, the list is endless if you dont like it dont do it urself but dont shot down ppl that want to its none of ur business what i or anyone else does

and like i said ur opinion is invalid as you havent bred rabbits be able to have an opinion

I find it amusing that you think from what i have posted i think i am "perfect" and a "saint".

I have made mistakes, and have learnt from them.

I have had litters born in rescue when pregnant does have come into my care. I have also handreared two orphaned litters.

I must ask, how old are you? As you don't seem to be able to type properly.

I believe it was you who turnt it to an arguement after i stated it is better to adopt rather than buy, supporting pet shops.

If you would like to turn this into a fully blown debate. I suggest you email me, as as you said, this is about rabbit breeds.

If you find it enjoyable to play god, that is you. Rabbits are the most mistreated and abused pet in the UK. If you wish to add to rescue problems and to that statistic, then it is up to you.

Kirsty - are you looking for a Netherland Dwarf? if you let me know the area in which you live and can try and find you a breeder

Just an example of SOME of you. You mean to tell me that even though thousands upon thousands upon thousands of rabbits sit in rescue shelters all around the UK we still breed these animals? Wheres the sense in that? That is nothing but selfishness and pig-headedness.

Apologies.
Its important to find the right breed for size especially for kids, but if you go to your local rescue shelter, they will be able to give you information about all the rabbits available.
Shelters do lots of work with them to make sure they are sociable and calm but like us they have their own cheeky personalities and some will be more suitable for children than others if they are quite nervous. Also, unlike dog and cat rescues its very common to find baby bunnies in rescues because people dump them because they're pregnant and all sorts of ridiculous reasons.
Please atleast give it a go and if theres no rabbit suitable for your needs, then look into a breeder. You'll here me say that alot on these forums! Goodluck in finding your perfect bun!
