Gary .

There are loads of reasons for this to happen , i think the cold weather side is a bit of a red herring though .

Normal reason for holding back is a delaminated Turbo hose , but the list does go on , airflow meters and high pressure fuel sensor connections are also problematic , along with other things .

My advice would be to take it to your local dealer and get them to put it on their diagnostic equipment where they will be able to read fault codes and run the engine up using realtime display to see how the sensors are behaving , this will generally cost around about an hours labout so expect to pay £80ish + vat .

Have to agree with DUDKAT, mate of mine has one of these and it was losing power, he took it to his local 4x4 centre, they had the diagnostic kit and found the fault in 5 mins and only charged him £20 + the part, reckons he could have spent many hours and a shed full of money if he`d started changing bits in order to sort it.

Hi - I have a 52-plate TD4 which does not start without Easystart in the air intake. This fault came on recently after it was low on fuel and parked on a hill (bonnet high). Easystart makes it run fine but has to be used when the engine is hot or cold. After that it runs fine, although the engine management light has come on a couple of times. Diagnostic test said change the Fuel Pressure Regulator swicth - £180 later there is no change. Next suggestion is the Air Flow Meter. Pumps have been tested - all OK and I don't think it's injectors. ANY IDEAS ANYONE ?? - thanks

I've had this problem before which ended up been the injector.
The guy from the garage said that this is becoming a common problem on the direct injection engines.
He said that what happens is that the fuel isn't been retained at the injector so it takes longer for the engine to start over.

This post goes to anyone who has a starting or running problem on a TD4 Freelander .

There are many reason for the above faults , low fuel pressure caused by various problems being the most common , i could give you a list but i doubt it will do you any good .

Your best option is to go somewhere with a decent fault code reader and obtain the fault codes stored within the engine ecu , armed with this info you stand a better chance of finding the problem .

If you have a running fault with reduced power and black smoke , check all of your turbo hose for splits and delamination , again this is one of the more common problems .

hi everyone. found the fault! had the ecu read and came back low pressure. Cost £25 for the check. Put new fuel filter on it at a cost £30 and it runs like a dream. On checking the service history it didn't have a major service at 36,000 miles.

I am experiencing this problem, however the lack of power is a bit inconsistant...at times the car runs normally and then labours when it hits a hill. I thought I had a fuel problem as I filled up at a garage I don't normally use.

Avenel.

Same advise really , get it into a garage who can read the fault codes and have alook at what all the various sensors are doing when the engine is running , if it is intermittent then that may be difficult .

The problem here is that they suffer from various faults ( albeit not serious ) which will sometimes give you similar running faults .
From your description it maybe an airflow meter fault but thats just a guess really ........... Sorry i cant be anymore help .

I have a Freelander 1.8 XEi (X Reg 2000) and had the head gasket replaced at the start of this year which I believe to be a common problem but I also have the following 3 problems and really don't want to pay Land Rover £ 70+ Vat per hour to investigate

The car is over revving when it is driven but the revs drop if it is revved up to 4000 but soon returns after driving.

The hill descent light stays on, we have had this taken off once but it returned after a few weeks.

It is so difficult to put the car into reverse gear, it has to be done very slowly and with force, I 'hate' reversing with this car because it takes time to get it into gear.

Any advice from anyone would be greatly appreciated.

lhobley ..

i had the same problem getting into reverse and sometimes 1st,sorted now tho, apparently you cant bleed the clutches as its a sealed unit so you have to have the unit replaced but it only cost 65 quid for the unit and 25 to have it fitted. when i was told what it was i thought it would be mega expencive but lukili it wasnt
