Hello comarades. A 126 Newbie here. I have just won an auction for a 126 on Ebay with a knackerred Big-end.
Is this likely to be a real pig of a job, or is is fairly straightforward for a reasonably competent DIY mechanic? Are we looking at a definite engine out job?
I'm picking it up at the weekend, but would greatly appreciate any return posts to help illustrate what I may well be looking at.
With Respect....John

hi there
i hope you have had your car done now as i see it was in january.just thought i would ask as i have only just joined the site.i have had fiat 126's for 20 years now on and off and i love them.the big ends are quite a simple job but the engine has to come out which is also a simple job as it is only 2 cylinder and reasonably light.if you have not had it done and need some advise please dont hesitate to contact me.thanks.julie

Dear Julie,
Things have moved on since that advert. It sounds rather naive looking back at it. I have joined the 126 forum under the name "normansinjunstevas". The chaps/chapesses have proved really helpful. When I bought the 126, I found the oil pressure switch was not connected, so I assume that it went unnoticed until the pump failed. This is probably the cause of the knackerred big ends. For this reason, I changed the engine, as the other one may have been well scuppered. The new engine is now in situ, but the initial firing-up seems to be a little illusive. I'm determined to get the thing going soon...even if it kills me!
Regards....John

hi john
im sure you will get it going and when you do you will love it.once they are running they are usually pretty reliable.they have their little quirks but you will get to know your own car.just an idea about the starting but you maybe already know.all of my 126's will not start without the choke full on then once fired half choke for a couple of mins and then turn off and should run sweet.hope this helps.julie

Julie.
Have you checked out : http://club126uk.co.uk/forum/index.php for some really maly advice.
My Fiat was drivable before I ripped it's little heart out, so at least I had the chance to fall in love with it. My two young sons are well keen, but my Old Lady hates it, and would not be seen dead in it.
Ah,well that's her loss.

John
