hi i too use both these products and on occassion the spyware does pick up more malicious types so feel it is doing its job besides there both free and anti-virus updates automatically daily.Obviously to buy products will add extra protection but is it worth it ? I am happy that these products are giving a level of protection i need! hope this helps a little :)

We always use ad-aware the basic is free and it deep scans everything you set it to using the custom scan settings. If you can get hold of pro with ad-watch then thats a bonus. Ive been a loyal Mcafee user for years now yes it costs you(well unless you know where to look lol) but Ive never had a problem with it. Only people who have problems with it is those with substandard factory built pc's which have no power.

Hi...i've never heard of ad aware..is it simple to use!! I tried this Nod 32 anti virus thingy few months ago..got a months free trial..that was ok actually..didnt slow computer down..but then it was gonna cost me about £40 or so...so didnt bother at that time. Are these freebies as good as the ones you have to pay for?? Some folk have told me no and some have said yes...whats your views?? Got brother over in Australia whos into computer big time and has been for 40 so yrs.(well its his job) also my brother in law over there says the free ones are just as effective as the paid versions. But i think they can get to different stuff than whats here. suppose at end of day boils down to ones preference eh? .....caroline.....ps...my brother in aus builds his own computers and he has the free versions too!! That oughta tell me somethin eh??!! mind you some of them he tells me about i dont think i would be able to work!! lol

Ad-aware along side your virus scan and firewall works well. The pro version only has a few extra features but the free version does the job very adequatly. It is simple to use, when setting the custom scan options you just point it to all the HD's etc you want it to deep scan, once its finished its only the critical files/folders/registry you need to delete, the proggy puts them in quarantine just incase summit that should work doesnt work afterwards but we have never had a problem with that yet.

The free viruscans and firewalls are better than nothing but you do get what you pay for and I wouldnt touch AVG, Norton etc with a bargepole. Mcafee might have a reputation for being a greedy proggy but its thorough and ive never had a problem with it and rarely even get a detection alert because it does its job.

Never tried it myself but Spybot search and destroy is supposedly ok too and you can run it alongside ad-aware apparently.

I use AVG antivirus and anti spyware, plus spybot occasionaly. If you go on answerbank all the techies on there recommend these. They say they`re as good as ,if not better than most of the paid for ones. They also say never install Norton.

Windows Defender from microsoft website.
Internet windows washer from http://www.eusing.com
Free registry cleaner from the same above.
ccleaner by piriform at http://www.ccleaner.com
and last but not least Ad-Aware from Lavasoft at http://www.lavasoft.com

I use avg free antivirus, it`s found and immunised a few trojans. I Also use avg anti spyware which seems to do the job and zone alarm free firewall.
These three are highly recommended by the techies on Answerbank.
Most of them wouldn`t touch Norton with a bargepole and recommend uninstalling.
I used to have spybot, but uninstalled, as I found it a nuisance. You can always reinstall if necessary, to do a scan if you`re having problems.
Answerbank is an excellent and interesting site, if there`s any of you who`ve never used it, have a look.

Hi , I would give the thumbs up to avg as it has never let me down, & never noticed it slowing my computer down even if it does I would prefer a slow computer to one that has a virus attack! I also find that zonealarm which is free is a very good firewall, also ccleaner is a free system cleaner which helps repair any errors. Also you could use a proxy server to hide your computer behind & protect it from attacks by downloading proxyway (free) http://www.proxyway.com There is a link on this site that checks how open your computer is on the internet if it can show information about your computer then hackers etc can see it too.

Try download.com to find these programs & other http://www.download.com

I've used both AVG products for more than a year. Never had any probs apart from the obvious slight slow down as the virus checker looks at new emails. The spyware programme always comes up with lots of medium threat cookies and the occasional high risk one.

AVG free is excellent; for spyware, the free download Windows Defender has excellent reviews, I've been using Ad-Aware, which received a so-so review recently, compared to WD, and though it has earned its keep by finding the occasional 'baddie' , it mostly captures tracking cookies, nothing threatening, and yes slows down the system.

Dont trust avg by itself... you should get multiple spyware running alongside each other. Usually no conflicts when you do this. Also if you have a genuine windows disk then also use windows security systems. Iknow alot of people slate them but a little extra protection is better than not enough. Protect all your avenue's.

AVG8 seems ok, was using 7. Seems ok the first time I used it found loads of spyware, but found nothing since.
Thought it seemed slow at first but then found fast scan and considering it scans for virus and spywere at the same time its not so bad. Just wondering if it is ok as it has not found anymore spywere.

I`ve found the new AVG ok, I`ve had a couple of warnings about files from limewire and deleted them.

Good 4 you. Beware of limewire (especially the rude stuff). I found too many viruses and spyware on that site. Other P2P sites also have them hence I don't bother with them.
