Fiat Ulysee JTD 2005

My Ulysee is great to drive but it seems very uneconomical like 22 miles per gallon when driving carefully. The car seems to produce alot of smoke when you accelerate. Also when you switch engine off there is a distinct parafin/ diesel smell and there's a humming sound comming from the front of the car, this will go on for approx 5 mins after switch off. It sounds like a pump is still operating. Can anyone help with these problems.
