I would be interested in hearing from people who live on houseboats. My husband and I are thinking about buying one and wanted to know what was involved. Thank you.

Don't buy one until you have hired one - ideally out of season in the depths of winter. It is nothing like living on a house, very hard work compared as everything has to be carted on and off the boat. Maintenance is more expensive than a house, so its not as cheap as you'd expect. If you have a bad bakc or ill health, it's definately not for you, you need to be fit!

I've lived on a narrow boat for the past two years. I'm 56 years old and had never lived on one or even stepped foot on one before. I wouldn't change it for the world. I have a heart complaint and I agree it is a physical way of life. I manage the boat on my own a 45ft heavy thing she is as well but I really would'nt change it and couldn't imagine living in a house. My neighbours are in their sixties, he has not long had a triple bypass. They sold their house and bought the boat not ever having lived on one before. They say they wouldn't change a thing and have no intention of ever buying land property. It keeps you fit. It keeps you alert, it gives you a lovely life style. It's not for everyone and many make the mistake of fancying themselves living afloat. Try it out. You will know if it is for you or not. PS. I like the winters, the canal freezes over the swans and ducks walk on the ice to my boat for some food and my fire makes the boat so cosy I have to open the doors most of the time and never have to wear a jumper inside. The only way to know if it's for you is test the waters yourself! all the best.
