Apart from cataclysmic depreciation is there any reason why, with two grand to spend I should go for an 83-85 380 benz over a 91-92 V6 citroen.

What depreciation. A car worth 2K only depreciates if it doesn't work. Get the Benz if you don't mind poor fuel economy.

if nothing else you will always be able to sell the benz as parts when you finish with it as for the xm you won't be able to give it away

I would go for the Citroen - why?

1/. It's "different" special sort of car and therefore carries some "risk" element. THe latter is something any "sane" person shies away from.

2/. This is a very advanced car, it actually responds on corners and "pumps up" the outside suspension, giving amazing road holding/comfort.

3/. You will always have an "interesting" car and a lively bunch of like owners/enthusiasts.

What the previous responder says however, is probably valid. THe XM is a classic car, not generally taken to by your average "Roast Beef" (I am one so I can say that)! The Mercedes might be the better long term financial bet, far safer etc, yawn, yawn....

By now the Citroen will be worth about £200, if that, while the merc will still be worth much the same (if it is still in the same condition).

There is a reason why nobody wants to touch a Citroen. The early XMs were particularly bad.

Speaking as a former XM owner and Citroen club member: avoid the early V6es at all costs. The engine was shared with the Volvo 260; it weighs a ton, it eats camshafts, and drinks petrol. Whatever you say about the rest of the car, that engine is a disaster - the best use for V6 XMs of that period is as spares donor cars to 'proper' ones.

By far the best models are the 2.1 and 2.5 turbodiesels - sadly, people know this so the only ones you normally see have been to the moon and back. However, the 2.0 turbo and 16 valve models are pretty good; the only combination which is to be avoided is the 8-valve 2.0 non-turbo auto: too slow!

Ignore pub bores who whinge about suspension complexity: there are places like Pleiades in Cambridge who will overhaul the suspension for less money than it costs to put new shocks on a Mondeo. Even the horror stories about £200 suspension solenoids which fail in rock-hard sports mode can be dealt with by bypassing them with a £15 curved bit of hydraulic pipe.

The best bargain XM is a 2.1 TD or 2.0 turbo with rock-hard suspension. Buy it for £250, spend another £250 with one of the independents getting it sorted, drive for another 5 years.

(the basic reason why 'nobody wants to touch a citroen' is lack of research!)

NB, comments about early 90's V6es don't apply to the late 90's V6: this is a fabulous engine married to an incredibly smart auto box. However, there are less than 100 of these in the UK, and they are not for sale!

I own a 1991 'H' reg Citroen XM 3.0 V6 24v. This engine is inline with a 5 speed manual gearbox and the engine produces a whopping 200bhp. This car has it original crankshaft, and for it's size, it doesn't use that much petrol. I was the second owner of this car, I bought it 4 years old and still have it today. When the first owner had it, when they were in France, the valves dropped into the cylinder block and started to rattle off the pistons, quite a common problem on the earlier V6's I belive. If there is anyone out there selling a V6 24v, the 200bhp edition at a reasonable price, then could they please post a message on this site as I might be interested in purchasing another one, these cars are awsom when they get around 4000 - 6500rpm, the growl that comes off these engines is phenomenal.

I'm a Polish owner of XM V6 12V from 1989 year. After 380 thousand kilometers car is still in top condition so I can't agree that those engines was a mistake. Of course this is a true if spoken about 24V version of V6 engine - this engine failed from premature camshaft wear inducted by design fault. Shortly speaking, this 24 valve engine was a big fault. Of course - V6 engine weights a lot and isn't economic but is very reliable and amazingly dynamic. This engine can be simply modified to LPG what makes him more popular day by day in Poland where LPG is widely accesible and cheap - for example one ltr of 95 petrol costs about 3.11PLN what equals about half pound and one ltr of LPG costs 1.2PLN what equals about 0.2 pound. This engine eats about fifteen ltrs LPG in real urban cycle so I can say that it's as cheap as turbodiesel. Of course, nearly every V6 model is very well equipped what in conjunction with mentioned economy makes him very attractive. I don't know if in UK or Ireland LPG is widely available but as far as I know this kind of fuel is still expanding over the Europe.
