Hi there,

Ive recently purchased a 2005 1.8 petrol mondeo with around 26k on the clock. When i go out to start it, sometimes it doesnt always start 1st time, sometimes not even second time. U turn the key and u hear it trying to 'fire' if you like but it just doesnt 'catch' (can you tell i dont know much about cars :-p) My first thought was that it may be the battery but after a 100 mile round trip i parked up for 5 mins and went to start it again and it never started 1st time. I cant seem to find any pattern. Ive looked at all of the below...

Hot/cold morning - No difference
Touching accelerator/clutch when turning key - No difference
Starting in gear - No difference
Waiting till ignition lights go out - No difference

Im not an expert but if i do 100 miles my bat should be fully charged, so i think we can rule that out. Can anyone suggest what else the problem could be prior to me putting it into a garage so i dont get stitched up like a kipper. Thanks

-J

Hi

I take it that the starter motor is working, as you can hear it, but is not spinning fast enough to turn the engine over. Does the engine turn over or does the starter motor spin without the engine ?

Hi, Iam presuming the starter motor is the thing u hear when u turn the key that goes e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e then broooooooom when the engine starts? If that makes any sense! I can hear it trying to catch, its like the starter motor is spinning but just no engine. Sometimes the engine barely catches and chugs like its almost about to turn off again, at this exact moment if i touch the accelerator the revs go up and it catches. Do you think the starter motor isnt spinning fast enough ?

Thanks in advance

Hi Jason

I think the starter motors on those mondeo's are of the pre-engaged type where in they flick over before they turn to start to turn the engine. ?

From what it sounds like it is a posibillty that the starter motor could be faulty, but then again it does start when you give it a bit of acceleration.
Although it sounds like the starter motor is not spinning fast enough to start the engine.

Is the battery ok, it could be that the battery is playin up and therefore not sending enough power to the starter motor as it is fed directly from the positive (red) battery cable.

This would obviously make the starter motor turn slower, does the speed of the starter motor decrease quickly when trying to start or does it decrease slowly?

Hi There, thanks for the response - The starter motor sounds fine i just started from a cold engine about 10 mins ago, depressed the clutch fully and turned the key and the starter was going but the engine just chugged and went out, second time it did the same exept i tapped the accelerator half way down twice to bring the revs up to about 3 - 3.5k and it 'caught' on fine :-/ so i turned off the engine and started it again and it worked fine :-/ is there an inexpensive way to test a battery/starter motor? if not how much would it cost for a new one ? Roughly ?

Thanks in advance,

- Jason

*Edit - Checked live from battery and its secure*
*Edit 2 - I think i have noticed that the ods of it not starting first time are increased if its been left overnight or on a cold engine. But then again, thats just proved me wrong cos its just happened after a long run*

if your battery and starter are fine. i would say its more fuel related. make sure your spark plugs are in tip top condition. back in my ford days . i remember having a few mondeos with starting problems and it was down to low fuel pressure. had to replace the fuel pump. and seems to fix them. also make sure the engine management has the latest software. i have also seen the new fiesta st with the same engine as the mondeo have starting problems too.

could be a water temp sensor works like a choke used to the sensor tells the computer the temp of the water and then adjusts the richness of the fuel ie the colder the engine the richer the fuel you really need to go to a dealer to hook up to a computer try a ford retail dealer they are cheaper than a main dealer

Background

The Mk3 1.8 and 2.0 Duratec engines can be very difficult to restart when you...

1. Start from cold,
2. Stop pretty soon afterwards (e.g. reverse out of the garage) and then
3. Try to start again

Solution

The solution is that when you stop the car in this situation, you press the accelerator half way down as you're turning the ignition off.

The problem is that normal exhaust gases from EGR in the inlet manifold cause dilution and resulting poor combustion on start up.

Pressing the throttle immediately after key off draws in a lot of air into the engine, thus flushing the inlet manifold of exhaust
