I have a Ford Escort with a bit of a problem with the dial lights and clock. The clock works when i don't have the side lights or headlights on, but when i do turn them on the clock doesnt work and im not able to change the time at all. No dials light up as well as the ashtray light, the stereo works and the internal lights work (thought it might be a fuse). I wonder if anyone can assist me with my problem.

You could check the fuse box is dry and free from corrosion.
I dont know exactly how the system works but when you put on SIDE/HEAD lights the controls you talk of should dime automatically. this is where your fault lies. Its what ever tells the interior bulbs/clock to dime. like a relay I would imagine it switches the power supply to these interior lamps and clock. I'd say its switching but either incorrectly or the lower power feed is disconnected. HOPE this helps shed some light on it for you. No pum intended just happened lol.

YEP, CHECK THE FUSEBOX, TAKE THEM ALL OUT AND CHECK FOR WATER AND USE A CAN OF WD AS YOU GO TO COAT THE ENDS, IT SOUNDS LIKE THIS IS A BRIDGING PROBLEM (ALTHOUGH IT COULD BE ANYTHING). JUST CHECK ALLWIRES WERE THE AFFECTED CIRCUTS COME INTO CLOSE PROXIMITY
