RTT Yes they are a lap dog.....well, mentally they are anyway!! lol
Met a lovely Weimaraner at a market stall and he was beautiful - very vocal though, and the owner sed this is typical of his breed. So if you want a quiet dog - maybe not for you! Also, they were originally bred as working dogs so need alot of exercise (as sed already) and they are verrry clever.
I would love one! They are already second on my "One Day...!" list! I just love their eyes and the fact that they are soooooo cuddly and affectionate - albeit a bit big..!lol

if you really want to learn about the weimaraner why not take a look on the WCGB breed website http://www.weimaranerclubofgreatbritain.org give rescue a call and then they will put you in touch with someone whose dogs you can go and see. Weimaraners are not vocal as a habit they bark like every other breed of dog and being a large breed its bound to be noisier than a smaller dog.

The breed as puppies do not require a great deal of exercise like all large breeds you follow a rule of thumb of an additional 5 minutes of exercise per session for each month of birth as large breeds are prone to Hip Dysplasia. Weimaraner are a very intelligent breed they require alot of mental stimulation as a hunting breed gundog training to get them mentally stimulated is brilliant as as dummies are used there is no need to be concerned about killing anything.

I have Weimaraners you are more than welcome to get in touch if you would like to see some or alternative come and see us at the Kennel Clubs Discover Dogs event in London or at the Discover Dogs tents at any of the Game fairs.

you can also join one of the forum http://www.weimaraner.tv or http://www.weimaranerworld.co.uk for more information on the breed.

hi my uncle has one, they are very nice dogs but very energetic, they do tend to calm down alot as they come out of their puppy stage. My uncles dog also doenst like to be left alone for too long - im not sure if this the case for all weimeraners! hopes this helps maddie

Weimaraners can suffer with Separation Anxiety as they are very people focused and like to be part of a pack but with proper training this is not an issue. From puppies they should be left on their own for regular periods of time so that they have get used to being alone. You can use the radio and television to help a dog with SA and company of another dog can help some dogs although this is not the first option to try.

Given the right training (which is lifetime not just a puppy class) they really are fabulous dogs, but you do get out what you put in so if your not prepared to do a lifetimes training this is prehaps not the breed for you.

They should also be well socialised with cats and dog educated children from an early age for a good well rounded pet.

I think we had one that used to live down at the bottom of our drive and it barked all day and night and the owner didnt do anythink n in the day she would put it on a chain in the garden and it would play in the traffic on the road at the bottom with my dog and we soon put a stop to that and made our garden as we call 'carrie proof' as if their is a hole she will be the first to no. when i met her she seemed a lovely dog but very bouncy and from what i gathered she needed quite a bit of exersise.

abi your neighbours were cruel no wonder the poor thing barked putting it on a chain indeed, were your neighbours out at work all day??? Did they actually bother to do any training with it??? was she left on her own???

There are irresponsible owners that really should not have a dog let alone a Weimaraner. In general dogs should not be left more than four hours on their own no matter what the breed, Weimaraners should not be kennel kept as they are a family dog and do not kennel well.

I often find that the complaint most people make about their dogs is down to a lack of training & consistant treatment, its amasing how many people complain about their dogs pulling on the lead when they haven't done proper heel work, or the people that say 'my dog is destructive and is ruining my house' usually should be saying 'we don't do anything to keep our dog interested and through sheer boredom our dog is entertaining itself by being destructive', for the majority of the time most problems dogs have can be heavily blamed as the fault of the owner... its sad but true.

I hate my breed being demonised as difficult to handle and forever barking this really is not true when the dog like any other breed is given the right home and the right environment.

lots of hard running and twice as much training evey day if not twice they have to be good with other dogs because the best way to run them is off the lead but you need to have a good recall i know i have a dobbie simmiler dogs and although his training is spot on on all else his recall is *!#%!@ it can be scarrie with a b ig dog flying at you at speed even if it is just to give you a kiss and play nice games with your dog

They do seem like lovely dogs - i would love to own one myself...
When i sed the one i met was very vocal, i meant it talked - not that it barked alot. He was a very sociable boy! Lovely. Was going to steal him...LOL

in all honesty faye if your friend needs their dog rehoming I would go to the WCGB Rescue or to Independant Weimaraner Rescue & Rehoming service (IWRSS) because they will find the right home for your friends dog.

Nobby if your interested in a rescue and there really are some lovely dogs that end up with rescue why not get in touch with them have a homecheck done and get a dog through them. Not all dogs are suitable for every home like anything else they range in their needs for the abilities of their new owners, no point bringing in a dog thats born to hunt if you want a pet dog it would be a nightmare. On the other hand having a nice dog placed that will suit your families needs and being given the support you'll get from rescue is always a much better way to do it.

We always have working dogs, and we do work them too! I love their intellect, their stamina and watching their natural instincts shine through. :-)
I would love one, one day - but at the moment i have two dogs and hubby says no more, unfortunately. I am already on the list of a few rescues - springer and dalmatians..i stay on there so if anythign suitable came up and it was the right time i wouldnt have to go through the home-checks etc again.
What really annoys me is when people get these breeds for their looks and dont consider the breed's needs - essentially a working dog needs exercise, and stuff to keep their minds busy. So many springers/dallies/labs for example are rehomed at about 18months old. Saddens me. Dont see many Weimies up for rehoming though.
