My Rover 216 cabriolet R reg (1997/8) K series had a new head gasket fitted a month ago as it was overheating. They cleaned out the system with washing powder. I'd paid 310 for the head gasket change & a new starter motor (as that went at the same time). It was ok for a week then started leaking water out from where a pipe joined the plastic part that joins the engine. Were having to put lots of water in it, but dial wasnt showing it too hot. We took it back & the mechanic put a rubber ring where the leak was which stopped that leak, so straight away it started leaking at the gasket itself. Mechanic said its not worth trying to sort, & I should part exhange it. He admitted he should have offered to replace the whole engine at the start, as now he spoke to someone who said its never worth replacing rover head gaskets. I think he's been a mechanic for years so was a bit surprised he didnt know that before. The car is lovely in all other ways so any advise please on what I could do? It is driving still but steam comes out from bonnet & it uses up the water so fast am constantly putting it in & then its empty soon.

We have heard your story many times before here. There is no way a head gasket would fail after only one month if it was repaired by a competent mechanic. You should ask for your money back or for it to be fixed. You can take him to small claims court for as little as £56.00. Bets on that he would pay up rather than loose time & go to court. I know this is not what you wanted to hear but there is no magic fix. If the head was skimmed & pressure tested, new head bolts used along with a quality head gasket then you would not be in this position now.
