Can anyone confirm if this is in fact true?

The head can be removed, it needs to go to an enginnering shop to be checked to see if it needs to be skimmed & also pressure tested. New head bolts should be used & a quality head gasket used. There is a modified gasket available that many swear by. Request a written quote with details of what parts you will be paying for & also ask for a life expectancy for the gasket. If they won't give one then don't have them do it. Our 214 gasket was done by the previous owner himself, not a garage or qualified mechanic, we have had the car five years now without any problems. So as you can see they can taken apart be repaired successfully.
