Hi Guys, Is it a common problem with 214 SEI manual, that the gearbox suffers from thrust bearing or washer noise much like the old Ford CVH and diesels. The car goes into gear and drives with no problems and the noise stops when the clutch is depressed, which to me with my 850000 miles plus as a taxi driver in Escort and Orion diesels, says thrust washer. Am I correct in this assumption, and can it be fixed without taking the box out, (yes I know this is a silly question but as i said i am more used to fords!!).

If the box is noisy with just the engine running & the noise goes when you depress the clutch then you have worn bearings within the box. Check the box for oil leaks & top it up to see if it reduces the noise. The quickest remedy is to replace with a second hand one from a newer car.

Find yourself a clean bench & strip out the old box first. Just do it bit by bit. Sorry I can't give you any instructions, you need to find a genuine Rover workshop manual. Is it not possible to have the case welded?
