Anything you want to know, my dad had one. They are very good cars, superb towcars, he has a 2.6 V6 now but still says that the diesel was a good motor. Watch out for clunks from front suspension when braking hard and hitting potholes etc, oil blowing passed the filler cap. Autos are superb, its a GM box but very smooth strong and reliable, just look out for fluid leaks which can mean that the box will have to come out and have a bush replaced that is seated on the the mainshaft. All in all a very good car let me know if you want anymore info, what year and spec are you looking at?

Thanks for theinfo , i am wanting an auto gearbox estate model diesel ;do you know if the autobox pushes up th consumption drasticly? I have seen the model but not test driven it and want to know if the rear legroom is good. My current car is a Vauxhall Astra estate and my two teenage boys are a bit cramped!!! Model wise full spec as possible AND if possible left hand drive......tall order but still worth a try !!! thanks for your info again!!

Auto box does increase consumption, which on a run can be as good as 40 mpg, but as low as 24mpg around town, bank on average of 29-30mpg. Where you from, why lhd? Elite/cdx spec is the one to have. THey were semi-facelifted in 98, with improved suspension, new seats, side airbags and improved headlights and interior trip computer screen( digits fail on earlier models) and completely facelifted in 2000, 2.5td was replaced about 4 months after this full facelift as it wasn't designed for the range wide 20k mile service intervals, and was replced by Vauxhalls own 2.2dti unit. Good luck, buy a good one and it will last forever.

BMW diesel in the Omega has to be serviced every 6,000 miles - not the 10,000 interval which applies to all other Vauxhalls from that time.

Omega CD/CDX/Elite 2.5TD Auto Estate is the model of choice, I sold many of these over a 5 year period (both new and used), Vauxhall diesel is ok but BMW is better, there are lots about and remember LHD is badged as an Opel.
Like any car FSH is mainly essential, due to the huge amount of depreciation these cars suffered most went to companies or small business users, the mechanics of them are robust but like any mass produced cars they can and will all go wrong eventually (the norm is 150,000 + miles).
I would pick and auto box, because round town it puts less stress on the engine and mechanicals as the car knows what gear to be in for the best economy.
Autocar can provide you with a roadtest reprint which is well worthwhile.
Another good source is the ex-police fleet as they are always better serviced than private cars, disregard marks of an honest car (stone chips and a good layer of dirt and grime under the bonnet) there is a good supply of Omegas in general so it is a buyers market.

I bought my company car, a CDX 2.5 petrol Omega estate manual box. Its now done 100k miles, the only problem was a cracked manifold at 40k - a known problem. I was warned off the auto box by a mechanic who picks up a lot of them from the motorway police in staffs/cheshire. He reckons mine is only just run in!

Police Omegas tend to beslightly up tuned 3.0 V6 petrol manuals, as they deal witht the abuse from the police a whole lot better than the auto, I used to sell them by the bucket load. Police ones make a gr8 buy as they are so well maintained, a few minor body blemishe are nothing next to a sound running gear, and so long as it has air-con central locking and electric windows and mirrors, that is all i am after. I have just bought another ex-police car, Volvo V70 T-5R, the usual estate put it on a rolling road and it has 310bhp at the wheels, no one in the force will elaborate but it has a service file a foot thick, and came with new tyres clutch and major service (including timing gear) love it to bits but not as smooth as the Omega, and with a day-glo jacket on the rear shelf people think i am some kind of unmarked police car. all good fun. glad to hear you all like the omega, which is some of the best value for money motoring you can get.

3.0 V6 Elite had leather from '94 on as a delete option (no-cost). However when the 2.5 V6 was put in there in 1997 then it was a cost option on those. Also option on CD and CDX at extra cost. Elite came with 2.5td 94-2000, (2.2 DTI 2000 onwards), 3.0 V6 94-2001 (3.2 V6 2001 onwards), 2.5 V6 97-2001 (2.6 V6 2001 onwards). I can vouch for the 2.5 td and V6 engines being superb, and reliable if maintained can run "forever". Hope this helps mate.

Great info spencer, thanks. I have a hunch tho that the elite is going to be out of my price range....may have to buy a lower spec ( CDX / CD) and have seats covered by upholsterer. I have about £2500

No probs mate, I'm a bit of a saddo about Vauxhalls. You could get a nice Elite for £3k mate. They are every bit as good as a 5 series. Let me know if you need to know some general points to look for. Theres an estate for sale on e- bay at the moment mate, 3.0 V6 elite, high miles but its not a problem to these motors mate. Happy hunting.

Thank the force for people like you :-) If i can get the elite for 3k tops, that would be great.....i have to sell my Jeep Cherokee first tho....4.0 litre guzzler. 14mpg round town...uh! What was i thinking of. AS to what points to look for, i dont have a clue. I know zip about this car. If you have any pointers to give me yourself, fire away... I'll keep you posted....lordy knows how long it'll take to sell the tank i have at the mo !

On a run a 3.0 Elite will do 30mpg, but you won't do much better than 20 around town if its an Auto as they all virtually were(manuals only done to special order). Assuming its the V6 3.0 you're after then check for oil leaks from gearbox as a seal often fails n the mainshaft afetr about 120k miles, part not expesive but its labour intensive as the 'box has to come out. The engine: check for oil leaks from rocker covers(can be more expensive to fix than you think), check headgaskets(oil in water and vice versa), make sure car idles smoothly when cold and hot, and make sure there is no engine management light on the dash(it looks like an engine with a lightening bolt going through it). The engine should be quiet and smooth. Obviously service history is important, and they all leak a little oil from rear diff where propshaft goes in nothing to worry about and very rarely enough to drip, just may need level checked after you have bought it. Inside make sure air con/climate works, as the pumps can fail on these cars, heated/electric seats also cd autochangers can be prone to failing so make sure it all works. The multi function display( which is operated by the right hand column stalk) can fade, so make sure the display is clear with out any failed digits( though replacements can now be bought relatively cheaply). Check also when Cambelt was last changed, if the job is done properly (tensioners and waterpump changed also) costs around £300.These cars can corrode on the bottoms of the doors, and around the rear wheel arches, but often this is confined to well used and abused examples, estates can corrode alond the bottom of the rear window. This is all I can think of at the moment, add this to the usual checks when buying a car and you will get a good car for life. If I think of anymore I will post them up mate. Hope this helps.

Big thanks spencer....thats great info. I dont necessarily want/need an Elite. My main requirement is leather seats cos of the hound. Its just that i thought the Elite was the only model that had leather. I'd definately buy a cheaper model if i could get leather. Tho i would prefer at least a 2.5/V6

Nice motor mate. Engine code will be 25td, the BMW ones will be identical to the Vauxhall ones as the physical engine itself is the same just some of the computer trickery is different. There is a prefix letter before the 25td which can vary from car to car. But there is a sticker usually on the left hand side( bonnet up looking from the front-back) of the rocker cover most were x25td, but just lok to check. Golw plugs are simple to change mate on these, you will need a long reach socket so it can fit over the plug similar to a sprk plug socket,(not sure of size). Remove the black cover that runs from front to back over the inlet manifold (screw driver in slot at front, and undo nuts at back. Then you will see the glow plugs (they have wires running across them) undo wires, then unscrew glow plugs and replace. Your car isn't that old, must have racked up a few miles to need these so soon!! If you need any more info then let me know. Hope this helps.
