ref timing chains

i drive a pertrol omega but experience of timing chains is - if the engines going ok, the chain's ok. when the chain starts to wear a) power drops off, b) you'll here it slapping. surely chains don't fail suddenly the way belts do, so no need to change 'just in case'. or am i wrong?

From what other people have said, it sounds like you're right.
Apparently only change it if you have the engine stripped for something else.
Thanks for the reply.
Stu.

Keith,

No I havent, I have been told so many different things to change from air flow sensors to cam shaft sensors that I dont know where to start. As the problem is intermittant I can not get any one to even look at it now. Sorry cant help but if your problem is the same and you resolve it please let me know.

Mark

Hi Mark
it may be your autobox has a fault, this will put car into limp home mode and will drive as though no power or very little power. It may be worth getting garage to check the fault codes for the gearbox as well as engine. the fact it is not there all the time may be a problem if it has not stored past fault codes.
regards
Les

Les,

Thanks for that, I have already had the gearbox checked and no fault codes showing they even drove it for 60 miles and checked the oil and nothing. Nothing either on tech 2 for anything else. I am at a loss. Plus the wife is giving me hard time as our savings went on buying this car.

Hi can you help please.

My Omega Estate 98 2.5 V6 Auto has developed a fault with the transmission. I am having to change gear manually and no diagnostic equipment at local garages can identify the problem. It happened about a year ago and then cleared, so I put it down to a loose wire somewhere, but I am not so lucky this time. There are no other symptoms other than the warning light on the dash.

Please help!

I had a similar problem with a 2litre '98 Omega Estate. Mine had a high mileage around 115,000 miles. It seems to have been cured by changing the automatic transmission fluid. This wasn't done as per the hand book. As much oil as possible was sucked out and replaced with new oil. This showed an improvement, then a month later the exercise was repeated to provide a better final mix.

hi spencer can you help recently had worked done on my 98 2.5 tourer which included front lower wishbones and new front tyres although not top spec tyres since work I have a droning noise from front tyres and tyres appear to be wearing on the inside, car has been back to garage which was reccommended on this site (mastertec in harold hill essex) but they found no fault, could it be tracking or front wheel bearings ? many thanks fred

Hi fred
If the inside of the the tyres are worn you must have all your wheels aligned
and the tracking done, becuase nowadays just going over a bump can Knock your tracking out and the garages are not liable. its is worth getting your tracking checked every six months.

Hello,

Got an anoying problem with my Omega, and before I speak with a garage would appreciate some thoughts plz

Car was serviced and MOTed 2 weeks ago and all was fine.

But today it started to struggle and lack power when accelerating around the 40 to 60mph mark when the revs are about 3K+

You will put your foot down whilst at speed and the car will drop a gear and then it will hesitate and seem to struggle to accellerate perhaps between the 3K to 5K mark then at 5K power will be delivered as normal.

Poodling about normally and not accellerating aggresively it seems fine.

If anyone can suggest potential cause for this I would be grateful

Cheers
Diddy

PS whilst not under load the car revs fine

Hi Fred
just looking over the post and yours came up, I am afraid that Omega's eat front tyres, over the years I have spent a fortune on new ball joints and tracking. I have now come to the conclusion that it is a design fault we are going to have to live with. The most economical way to deal with this is fit budget tyres and change them round frequently, sorry if it seems a negative attitude but it is the only way.
Regards
Les
P.s. Just binned a pair yesterday off my 2.5 TD CDX Auto Estate, must have at least 5mm left but scubbed off on inside edge.

Having read your rather familiar email I think the verdict is to have your tracking done regularly every six months or sooner, as speed bumps can knock it out.

check the compartment where the pollen filter is located, the drain at the bottom some times blocks with leaves, it then fills with rain water and over flows through the vent in to the pasinger foot well.
