I get a very bad/poor/slow gear change (it's an auto) from the start of using my car.

But the main issue is 3rd to 4th just revs up high so often now, and goes to 'automatic gearbox failure'.

If I can't get this fixed soon, and I cannot sell the car like this, what on earth can I do? :(

Simon, I know that time has passed but can you remember how you fixed the Speedo ABS/TC issue you had in 2005? I now have the same problem and the 2nd garage are having a issues fixing. Any help very welcome.

hi - just read your email 10th june 06. we have a omega elite v6 - 2001 with cutting out problems - currently the garage is baffled - vauxhall says the engine management says all is ok - our problem was almost identical as yours - did you finally succeed? and how much are we looking at? - currently our car has let us down 3 times over a period of 8 days - no joke.

Pamh, I now have the problem solved. It was caused by a faulty ABS chip that had to be replaced. Quite costly new cip about £250 plus fitting. Frustrating thing was that at failure there were no messages being written to the diagnostic store. So garage says 'nothing wrong'. However having no speedo in a world of speed cameras and no TC or ABS wasn't acceptable so had to fix. Shop around!!!
Good Luck John P

A common source of this problem is the idle control valve being clogged up. Clean it with carb cleaner, put on a new gasket and you're away. Not sure irf this would apply to your engine but it certainly does to the 2.0 ecotec

Hiya,

Was this reply for my problem, or the other guy's problem? The trouble with this thread is that you never can tell ;)

My issue is basically unrepairable as it stands, the specialist on automatic gear boxes hasn't been able to fix it and he replaced the gearbox and has tried other, smaller things to help. The issue still persists and it quite random in nature ... I'll be driving along gaining pace and suddenly the car refuses to go up a gear and just revs high, eventually clunking hard into gear with avengeance, leaving me in limp home mode with this darn error message.

Flat Battery - Deadlocks won't let me use a key.

Any idea how to get into my 1999 Omega Estate with a flat battery ? Tried the key in both the boot and drivers door and they won't turn to unlock, so guess the deadlock is electrically operated.
I've also tried to reach up through the engine bay to the bonnet latch, without success.
Is it time to break a window to get in and open the bonnet to recharge the battery OR is there another way??
Help and advise gratefully accepted.

Just a thought.... Do you have a caravan tow hitch? You need the 2nd grey socket (the black one is no use for this). If so one of the pins (normally) feeds the car battery through to the caravan. In this case you could use it in reverse and feed a charger into it. But be careful not to poke too much amperage in otherwise you would blow a fuse. But 10A ought to be ok.....
Cheers

Can anyone help?
my '96' 2.0 ltr omega (130,000 miles)
is playing up.
The autobox sometimes drops out of 4th gear, but fipping it into 3rd and back to 4 usually, but not always , helps!
Also it seems to have developed a rattle when put in drive and I can't seem to find where it is coming from.
to top it all it also has a leak from the heater matrix (drivers side) and my windscreen mists up.
But otherwise the car is in great shape!!!!
Any one got any, CHEAP!, ideas on help??
Thanks,
Ed
ps have put this in new discussion so as not to confuse other lines of enquiry!!

Thanks Roger, I'm on your wavelength there. Had thought about using the towbar connector too, but this one is the standard black socket and so I think it is only connected with the ignition.. Haven't seen a grey socket before.
Any other ideas welcome....

Hi Ed,

It sounds as though your first problem may be the same as mine - I don't know exactly what's wrong but my Omega 2.2 Auto is now regularly reving up high for no reason when I am in drive, and I'm pretty sure it's got something to do with 3rd/4th gear. Trouble is, I am car-thick :(

As it stands, the garage cannot fix it (auto gearbox specialists), the gearbox is less than a year old and was replaced when this first started to happen, so it's not the gearbox itself. I believe it may be the electronic computer on board, or the wiring...

the key should let you in even if the battery is dead.(mine did when the remote battery was dead whitch should have the same efect)
the problem may be that the key is worn with the ignition switch, but the door locks have never been used becouse you use the remote and the levers are sticky try wd40 ing the locks and jigerlin the key a bit.
cheeper than a new window

Hiya,,, We have an Omega estate TD. We were driving to my house the other day from Sawnsea and it konked out(died) 500yds from my door...no water in tank...and ever since then...it drinks water but only when it is running...will not do it if standing in drive running, only when revved....and driving. BUT, we can't see where the water is going. There is no sludge in oil, no water coming from exhaust, and apart from this it runs fine for 40-50 miles, then it happens again.....totally baffled.... wouldn't mind if l could see where the water is going but it literally disappears !! Am l ging mad.....YES!!!!

Dunno specifically about an Omega but my experience with previous cars suggests the head gasket has blown. As you say it is not getting into the oil but into the cylinders. The water doesn't go down when standing as it needs a bit of vacuum as the cylinder is drawing in fuel to suck a bit of water in too. You don't see water in the exhaust since the small amount of water gets mixed in with the firing and separates into hydrogen/oxygen. Don't keep driving like that as it will make a groove in the cylinder head which will then have to be planed rather than just replacing the head gasket.

Hi Cassie
it could be the head gasket but I think it may actually be the cyl head, prob a crack or more likely one of the inserts that the injector sits in. the only way to be certain (and of course you do not want to do the job twice) is remove cyl head and have it pressure tested and skimmed. Of course if when the head is removed the head gasket shows a fault (I don't think it will) then after checking the head with a straight edge for dips and twists you could risk just replacing the head gasket, if this is done at a garage then I doubt they would warrant the repair with out the pressure test and skim.
Hope this helps
Regards
Les

Cassie- I had one of those long ago. Dont think head gasket is the problem because its running ok. There is a small impossible to reach water hose to the rear of the head it might be that. You need to get engine hot and hold it revving whilst looking under the bonnet.
If it blows water out of over flow its head gasket.
Also look for leak under front of engine, water pump failed on mine once.

Transmision speed sensors are invariable fitted to rear of gearbox.
Put front of car on axle stands, located above and to the left of the prop shaft flange, held in by a bolt.
