The V6 engines do this from new, thats no lie. My dad has had his 2.6 from new and its always done it a bit, i have seen others too. Its certainly nothing to worry about. Nice car, go enjoy

I suspect thius is down to a wheel sensor failure/intermittent failure. Try reading the fault codes which will point you to which one.

Can anyone help me? Please.

I have a 98 Omega estate auto with a 2.5 V6 engine which has suffered a timing tensioner pulley failure resulting in two completely stuffed cylinder heads.

I have been trying to find a replacement or reconditioned engine or heads at a sensible price. Having already bought an engine from a dealer that turned out to be no better than my own I am now the very upset owner of two scrap engines.

Does anyone have experience of buying a replacement engine? if so could you recommend a source.

Will an engine reconditioner buy my two duff engines or are they scrap?

Hi,
Try these people - tell 'em they were recommended etc & how you got to hear of them.
I bought some valves cheapish for my father-in-law in Caribbean, he has a Vectra,.
They were prompt delivery & helpful - they might at least suggest somewhere:-

I have a 99 2.5V6 saloon. Lovely solid car - leather seats, smooth engine, no rattles. Its only done 38,000 miles with a main dealer service history, but on some bumpy roads. The top and bottom bushes have just been changed on the front suspension, which tightened it up nicely.

However there is still some play (or a 'clonk') which I sometimes feel in the steering column when i go over bumps - especially in the middle of a corner. I had the tracking done and thats fine. Any ideas Spencer or other experts out there ??

Hi there,
Your clonking noise could be the anti -roll bar drop- link. I had this on my Omega and a Carlton before that.It seems to be a part that is overlooked cos two garages couldnt sort the problem.
Iits so easy to fit as well

Hi,
I've had the same fault with my Omega's automatic gearbox; it will sometimes run normally for several days and then 'jump out of gear' and need manual shifting, with the 'automatic gearbox' warning displayed in the multi-function display. Stopping and switching off will often clear it (but not always), and it might then not run normally for a while.

I've had it checked by Vauxhall (computer diagnosed) and they found a fault logged and asked if it had been serviced recently and the plugs changed. It had, but the garage insists it installed standard plugs for the type. Strangely, for several days after the diagnosis the gearbox behaved normally until once again doing its little funny! made me wonder if just plugging in the diagnosis system could have had any effect?

I alos mentioned the suggestion I saw on this site about disconnecting the ECU for 10 seconds, and the garage was dead against this. No-one was quite sure why, though. I'd have tried it if I knew where the ECU could be switched off!

Anyway, I'm now no nearer finding a solution - appreciate any ideas.

Hi,
Sorry to hear about your problem.
Why can't the garage concerned at least provide you with the diagnostic code? A little confused 'cos I was sitting here reading your message, and wondering what the hell the plugs could have to do with the automatic gearbox gear selection process.
Is it possible that this is just a bit of Vauxhall dealer bXXXXXXt!
Someone help this guy out!!

Hi,
thanks for the interest; I contacted the garage which did the diagnostics, and eventually they came up with the printout. It shows 2 faults: '56 - Selector switch, undefined' (which I think is an old fault, happened over a year ago and was down - I think - to finger trouble in putting the selector in between two gears and trying to drive off. Anyway, the second fault seems to be the current one; '39 - no transmission RPM signal'.

Does that help narrow it down at all? I'm still finding the car will drive normally most of the time, but if I leave it idling for a few minutes it will often then generate this 'automatic transmission' fault on the display and the gears will need changing manually. However, if I switch off the engine for a second or two and then restart, it will usually cure it. I don't know if it's connected, but the idle revs vary between about 600 and 1100.

Got any clues?

Thanks

this could be an engine crank sensor fault believe it or not. (tyhough I would have thought that this would have shown on an en engine ecu fault code read. Does the rev counter jump up wildly on start up?

Please be aware that you need more than valves. These engines almost certainly break guides. We sell the valves for between £3 - £4. I can supply these. Will need to check the exact prices (I'm not at the workshop at present). I am an engine reconditioner, based in Milton Keynes.

I have some core units I could recon if you wanted them. Recon heads are approx £400 per pair (again, I need to check that price).

If I can help at all please give me a call. See http://www.tmi-miltonkeynes.co.uk for contact details.

Hi,
Thanks for the tips - after your message I checked the revs on next start up , and they seem to be fairly stable. On ignition the revs go immediately to about 1100, and stay stable until the engine is warmer, when the revs can often vary between about 600 and 1100 on idle. That any help?

Cheers

Car won't start.

I have an M-Reg 2.5 TD omega that won't start.

when you put the key in the ignition instead of the heating coil coming on there is a relay ticking (about 2 ticks per second) and the coil light flashes in time with it. If you actually try to turn the engine the relay clicks much faster (5-6 times per second) but nothing else happens.

Any ideas?

Last week number 4 injector was replaced which apparantly has a sensor to control the other injectors. I can't see that this has anything to do with it but maybe it does?

It's late in the discussion, but I have been looking at an Omega CDX 2.5 Diesel to buy for £1500, but since reading your comments, it appears it will only do about 30mpg.

Is there anything else you might add to this; I live near the A1M, but go to towns a lot.

My car is a company Vectra 1.9TD which goes soon, so want a economical car but with auto and diesel.... and toys if poss!

Would it benefit me to get it?

NO !!
Must admit I am a bit disappointed with the fuel economy on my Omega Diesel ll!!

My '99 CDX auto is a SUPER car and runs great,Went for the Diesel
as I needed a bigger car for mainly (at the moment)around the
town use.

Which shows up on the 'puter display as 21.4 MPG at an average speed
of 16 MPH not exactly motorway cruising I know!!

After my petrol Carlton and 2.0 Echotec Cavalier, I expected my £25 to
take me a bit further using diesel!!

My parents use to have a BMW 2.5TD. I think it was that engine, but not certain.

Anyhow, it did about 40-45mpg.

Is it possible for some cars with that engine to do more than others, because engine quality, driver style etc.

I'm no slouch on the road, but think that 21mpg that you quoted is incredibly low; it's what a Jeep 4.0L could do! (a friend of my had one in petrol).

I have a 1997 2.5td auto estate and live in a hill part of west yorks, locally I get 29>34mpg, auto's don't like low speeds and hills when it comes to economy. touring the Borders (fast empty local roads 50> 60mph with the odd hill) over 600 mile average it returned me 43mpg. On a trip back from Plymouth last week (320 mile) it returned me 41mpg @ aroung 80mph fully loaded 4 adullts and lugage for a week as well as a boat load of wine.
I am happy with the economy of this car since I chipped it and decatted it around 5 months ago, it increased the power significantly and increased the economy by around 10% locally and 15% motoway.
