My 96 Auto 2.5 TD Estate gives a consistant 33-34 mpg (I have logged for 15 months now) Most mileage is Motorway, no passengers or cargo at no greater than 70 mph & I will admit to being dissapointed with the economy The quoted 40 - 45 mpg from the same engine is what I was anticipating when I bought it Can anything be done to improve the fuel consumption?
I was about to buy the Omega I have seen, and even check the economy with the BMW 2.5TD of the same year. It apparently does 37mpg. My Vectra 1.9TD can do about 47-48mpg, though I have heard others do 53mpg, so it really does depend on the car. But after seeing in an old WhatCar magazine, the rating of 36mpg, I am put off, as I will be doing a fair bit of town driving.
I was getting similar mpg until I removed the cat, this increased power and economy a little then shortly after that I chipped the ecu, and that gave me a significant all round improvement it even felt smoother and better to drive. The down side was messing about to make up a new pipe to replace the cat (chopped up 2.5 transit tail pipe) but little cost, but the chipping was around £400, I went for the one from Tunit as it is ajustable via a tuning screw in the side of the unit, just wish I had done it 3 years ago when I bought it.
So you have achieved 33 - 48 mpg. Very good indeed. But when I see 37mpg as the 'overall', it does put one off, when I have been use to a company car Vectra diesel doing 47mpg. I must buy my own car now, just really on the fence on whether to go for a Omega 2.5tds auto, Jeep 2.5 Ltd Auto, or a smaller diesel in manual.
I have just found the site and found the discussions very interesting. I own a 3.0 Elite on a N 95. Bought with 72k last year for £2400. It replaced a 2.0 Calton CDX with a light year or so on it. Since then Rocker Cover Gaskets gone, Craked Exhaust Manifold, Tracking rods and wishbones replaced to save tyres and now finally headgasket leaking on to crankcase sensor causing all sorts of probs. £1200 repair costs looks like the end is nigh and best put the money to a less thirsty 2.0 omega 4cyl as these seem to be more reilable than any of the V6s and half the price to maintain. All else works and it's a shame to right the car off - unless there are any suggestions out there???? - project for anyone...

In any event, if you buy an eight year old car with some miles on the clock, these are the sort of problems one can have, it's not limited to Vauxhall. Honest Guv
It says the cruise control isn't working anymore. Easy to fix or not ??? Has anyone has an Omega AND a 1992-94 Scorpio? Which do you prefer?
The Omega 2.5TD is a 'drive by wire' ie; there is no throttle cable all the normal functions are controled by the engine ECU. so it depends what bit as gone kaput!! There as been a lot of discussion on cruise control on this board (well worth a look anyway) http://autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/omega_own......yguid=130417612 Mike (Walsall) '99 TD CDX
I`d like some advice on my 2.5 TD Select Auto 97 R reg Omega Estate if possible. I`ve had a few niggling things with it-the gearbox seems"sloppy"i think this is a common thing around this age-the car has done 129.000 miles,it changes through the box fine when pulling[say uphill and when you put your fut down]but when idling or driving slightly downhill, with not much pressure on the accelorator it will somtimes have hassles changing through from 3rd to 4th-always between 30 and 40 mph-once changed its fine, what i tend to do is drive round town with 3rd selected and then change into drive on a longer run-saying this i gave it a 50 mile run yesterday to get new tires, which was mostly dual carriageway and it didn`t do it once, but once back in my home town and slowing down it does it again-and always on the same stretches of road-course by now i know whats coming and change down to 3rd and its fine.Like i say its no major thing but if you leave the box and dont change it will race away as if in neutral and then the car will drop into crawler[when the ! will light on the panel]and needs restarting to get rid of it[sorry for the untechnical terms,i don`t know too much about the mechanics],hope you can see what i mean about this.I`ve had the car nearly a year and its done it from the go,we changed all the filters[apart from oil]on getting it-do you think a new oil filter changing the oil in the gearbox could do it?? I`d like to sort it out if poss-or is it looking like a recon gearbox job? The display on the trip computer is gone too-i see this is a common thing-all i`ve tried is the fuse to it which is fine but i`ve heard the bulbs often go,is this quite a simple job to do? One more thing[and thats it for now-honest!!!]when the fuel gets low, just above red,the car will cut out, even though its not properly empty,i`ve tried some cleaner in the tank but thats not done it,could it be faulty senders on the fuel guage, and is this much of a job?? All in all its a great car-like has also been said, fuel economy round town isn`t great but on a run its superb. I will probably sell this car on once i`ve sorted these couple of problems as my wife has passed here test and we need something smaller to be honest-whats a good price to ask do you think, its in ex con inside-good out-couple of scratches and marks etc-i can post pics to help if wanted-thanks in advance for any info. When i get a new car it will be another vauxhall so i`ll be adding this forum in my faves! Great work!
It's an M Reg with 105000 miles on it. Pretty low for the year. It's an auto with lots of toys, except leather. I'm trying to find out the overall genuine MPG, plus what the car is like for the year. I may have asked this before on here - but cannot find it. It's £1.2k.
It dissapoints me
A difficult question to answer "genuine mpg" as you have prob read loads of different mpg's on this forum, all with same engine!. It will depend on many factors, condition of engine, your style of driving etc. I am a lucky one just under 50 on a motorway run at 65ish mid 30's round town, but i have a manual which will help. A note to other 2.5td heads, I wanted to check my intercooler fan was working prior my towing trip to Spain this year, (the fan was stiff to rotate) my dealer said try the fuse before you bring it in, and sure enogh it had blown trying to turn the fan, so a quick check for you, 20A (yellow) located in the fuse compartment above the battery, and also check ease of rotation of the fan, I found loads of debris around fan blades, as the rubber intake duct funnels everything in off the road. cheers
