I have a diesel omega and need to know an easy way to replace the damper on the drive belt tensioner, it seems to need to be compressed but I cannot manage it.
Many thanks Rob

The Belt tension is is just applied by a strong spring around the tensioner, it is not damped so if it was broke it would be floppy, to release it ie for changing the Serpentine belt you need a large allen key and just turn it back off the belt until you can slip the bely off the pulley, then slowly release it. Reverse procedure to refit belt (you need 3 pair of hands though to feed it on)

I posted a plea for help some months ago but unfortunately there was no response and I am still plauged with the same problem. I have a '99 3.0 MV6 Estate which I have had for two years and which I love to bits. In my view, in terms of performance, equipment (I was lucky enough to find one with leather) and value for money, it nails BMW and Volvo (I've had a T5 and a 528i and whilst both decent motors I still prefer the MV6). So much for the praise. For the past few months the car seems to have developed a mind of its own and the revs will suddenly shoot up from 500 to 1500 or even 2000 with no warning. As you can imagine this is more than a bit disconcerting and means one has to be ever ready with the brake pedal. Occasionally, just beforehand, the engine management light will flicker for a second or so, but not always. I have had the idle control unit checked and cleaned to no effect and no problems seem to show up on diagnostics. The problem occurs almost every day now and can take place at any time irrespective of whether the engine is hot or cold. Before I spend even more money chasing my tail I wondered if any of you out there have had the same problem or have any ideas how it can be fixed. I am really hoping that it is not the engine management unit as I guess a new one will cost an arm and a leg.

I have a 99 2.5 v6 Tourer, and I get the same symptom occasionally - just did it to me this afternoon while sitting waiting to pull out onto a main road. Rather disconcerting. I'm afraid I have no answer for you, but will watch with interest. Have you tried posting a query on
http://thunderace.legend.co.uk/cgi-bin/advice/index.pl?
reconfigure
- it's an ecellent Vauxhall board, and you may get a meaningful response.

Many thanks for the tip Duke. I'll give it a try. In the event that I find a solution I will certainly let you know. In the meantime it would be interesting to learn if anyone else out there has had similar problem and more importantly, how the hell they fixed it!

Hello All

I have just bought a 1998 2.5CDX Estate. It seems fine except there is a problem with the car misting up. Could this be a leaking heater matrix or is it connected with the aircon ? Could it be a connection ?? Any advice would be helpful.

Cheers

Chris

I have recently bought a 96 V6 Tourer with 146000 on the clock. It seems to be in great nick ecxept for very noisy tappets which I expect to be solved when I introduce soem oil that is not based on vinegar. (Thin, Thin). One thing that does worry me is the lack od Servive History with the car. It has had a glut of work done on it (Brakes, Exhaust, Nre Tyres Etc Etc) but I cannot verify if the cambelt has been changed. I am not completely mechanically illiterate but I am quire daunted by the prospect of changing the canbelt. is this an easy job as it appears to be (only 4 components in the Kit) or should I leave it to a professional.

leave it to a pro, honest its one of the worst cambelt jobs possible, four cams etc, one tooth out can soemtimes be enough to writeoff one of these motors.

can someone help,

it seems that some garages wont work on omega's they say they are a nightmare, I just think there mechanics are a nightmare,In shrivenham so aviod them. I have problems when I ecelerate, the car juders and spits like it is miss firing, granted it is a 95 model, it also will not pull away properly and fails to respond properly and the only way to make it respond is to put it in to 1st and 2nd gears.or press the S button which is not working properly now. it is a auto transmision. can anyone suggest what it might be. can it be the sparks plugs or somthing more serious. please call me with an indication or email me. I would really appreciate it. is it time to get another car or is it somthing that can be repaired

Hi all. I have recently bought a 1999 Omega CDX 2.2 diesel estate from a network Q garage. I have taken the milage from 42K up to 53k miles in the last 8 months and am generally very happy with the car. However I have two problems that are driving me mad and I'm trying to work out if they are real problems of just "vauxhall" build quality issues.

1) The door lock knobs rattke in their holes when the engine is idling. You would not belive the noise they make. I can't believe this is normal on a £25k car.

2) The door / window seals squeak constantly on roads that are not absolutely smooth. I've tried lubricating with silicone spray which works for a week or so and then the squeaks come back.

Anyone else had / have these problems and any advice?

Cheers, Peter M.

If you get hold of a haynes manual for the omega it will explain in detail how to perform this operation. Once you have done it you will wonder what all the fuss is about! Very basically, and I am assuming that you mean the centre consol with all the switches in it, you remove the radio, then very carefully put your hand in the cutout, approx 5 to 6 inches back from the facia, you should find a metal bar atached to 2 metal vertical pins. pull this bar down and the fascia will fall out. If you try to remove it without pulling this bar you will cause a lot of damage!!!! I have done this a couple of times over the last couple of weeks as I have just had to replace the ECC,(Electronic Climate Control unit). I have also just discovered the use of ebay. Loads of parts for Omegas, including workshop manuals on CD for less than a tenner.
Hope this helps you but if not just post another message!

Hi
The bar you need to pull down is a spring loaded square cast alloy 'U' The top of ends of the 'U' locates in two holes in the switch facia.
Before refitting the facia fasten a longish tie wrap, or a shoe lace to the bottom of the 'U' so if you need to remove the facia in the future simpley pull down on the lace through the radio apature, saves messing around in the maze of wires.

(The thin 12 inch 'coathanger' wire is to hold the electricalwiring in place do not pull this in mistake for the cast alloy 'U')

I noticed that when the re-circulation switch was on, if I forgot to turn it off then the car steamed up. Is yours switched on and maybe the bulb has blown so that it is not evident?

Sound like the crank case sensor, mine was cutting out at lights and would start after about 10 mins. it is a common fault with omega`s. be careful my gargae charged me £400 to fix it as they did not know why the car kept cutting out and did loads of tests the part only cost £45

Hi,
I missed the hot starting problems with 2.5TD, but nevertheless
I can give the following observations.

1. If it starts ok from cold mechanical engine bits and timing can be safely ignored as reasons for not starting hot.

2. If it runs perfectly ok when hot immediately prior to switching off engine, the mechanical properties of the injector pump can be put above suspicion.

This only leaves the electronic portion of the Bosch fly-by-wire ?
system.
Following this reasoning, which part could be responsible for either:- a. changing value when hot when it should not do,
or
b. not changing value when hot, when it should do.
The most likely component to be causing the problem is the fuel temperature sensor, and is most likely to be situated on the pump body. Main dealers are unlikely to be of any help with spares, though they will be able to cure your problem with a new pump, (£2000). Best to talk to a Bosch agent and get them to order a spare. (about £40)
Best of luck Tony. (thats if you still have the car!)
