Sorry to say the filter / fluid change was not a cure all tip!! Although I think the box better 'feels' better and £65.00 was not bad in 140000 miles. It was money well spent for peace of mind alone on knowing for sure that the box had been (well) serviced at least once since 1999!! Like your Omega, I am always under the impression the 'brain' (ecu) controling the auto box gear change points, is not 'thinking' quick enough and knows what to do at exactly the right time!! As a point for over 30 years I have only had auto cars , My last two Vauxhalls with the more 'modern' computer contolled boxes have been realy superp in smoothness and quality of gear changing, I have always use the accelerater to change gear, ie; accerate away, ease up on the gas pedal, car changes to next gear, accelerate again ease up on gas pedal the car changes up to next gear etc; Around town pressing down on the gas pedal (NOT kickdowing) then easing back makes the car change down a gear. A type of control I have never been able to utalise on my Omega Diesel !! Mike (Walsall)
Upon starting the car after leaving it overnight,or being parked up for a few hours, its very slow to respond, slipping it into reverse or 3/or drive it takes ages to respond, the revs race away and not a lot happens to be honest.Gradually it will start to pull away, but quite often the revs race away at an alarming rate-4-5000,and the engine warning light will come on and the car needs restarting. After a while like this[usually around 5 mins]the car will gradually return to normal and drive fine until left idle for a long period again. It seems to be getting gradually worse, taking longer and longer to return to normal, and after a while of furious revs, there`s an almost metallic smell. There`s plenty of oil in the engine, one thing i`ve not done though is change the transmission fluid/filters etc,the car has done 130.000 miles, and i`ve had it a year, apart from this its fine. I`m hoping someone has come accross a similar problem, and can tell me how to go about sorting it.I took it to a local garage who told me that-changing the oil/filter in the gearbox could be a lot of money spent for nothing-he told me the filter costs £70 alone, let alone the labour-is this right??? Any info would be gratefully recieved,so thanks in advance!
I think you will find that your 2.5 TD Auto as four (forward!!) gears not five. Dunno about your 'big' fault ie;,"but quite often the revs race away at an alarming rate-4-5000,and the engine warning light will come on" etc; The smell and sounds you describe sugests the bands in the box are slipping quite badly, I would suggest you go to a reputable auto tranny specalist and get them to do a proper check as the sumps have to come off to change the fluid (Dexion 3g) / filter, and 'nip up' the rear band anyway!! There is a magnet in the base of the large do 'grap' any mettalic particles wich gives an indiction of any major wear (proplems) in the steel parts department. The colour (and smell) of the fluid gives an indication of the condition of the bands. The fluid should be a brightish red,I would guess yours is a 'mucky' brown. I reckon the dealer (steeler!!??) you went to must be a rip off merchant, check out the price of the filter with Vauxhall yourself!! Mike (Walsall)
Sorry for missing words this bit should read....... 'There is a magnet in the base of the large sump to 'grap' any mettalic particles .... I was told It is a normal feature of later Vauxhall automatic cars to be a bit 'lazy' changing gear when cold, as it helps the 'cat' to marm up quicker!! Once again dunno if it's 100% correct!! Mike (Walsall)
Seems a shame to scrap it as the rest of the car is in excellent condition-air con working etc,and as i`ll be getting a new car in march[due to family bereavement]i`ve stuck it on ebay for sales or repair.if anyone`s interested drop me an email you can see it here- http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dl......item=4518975023
recently developed similar problem with smell of butninng. had rocker gaskets replaced as oil appeared to be getting to exhaust manifold on nearside. Oil still seeps from joint where filler tube joins rocker coverafter replacing both O rings on tube and filler cap. After a run, burning smell and smoke from oil dipped onto exhaust manifold and smoke emits from filler tube when cap removed, also slight creaming form on underside of cap. Any ideas please.

Firstly in answer to Raggie, is it just the cassette for the CD that you are after or the CD unit itself? I recently brought a 2.5 TD Elite, the CD changer was missing from the boot, no problem me thinks! I have since found out that to replace the unit (only available from Vauxhall) will cost over £400 and can only be programmed to suite my Philips/ Bose system by Vauxhall! a scary proposition. I am still looking for alternative answers! Secondly, I also had the same problem as Omegaman, after buying a second keyfob for my new car, the dealer advised me that programming it was simple, turn on ignition and press and hold the unlock side of the keyfob, then try the lock side. I also had great dificulty in achieving this, but my problem was more serious. On further investigation I discovered that the Anti theft/ central locking system loom is completly burnt out!! I now have to resort to opening the car with a key! ( How inconvenient).
I have been the owner of a V6 2.5 Tourer for 9 months now and have had to cure many niggling problems. I will be glad to share my experiences with others as and when the relevant topics arise. Now to my current dilema! My engine is suffering from piston slap and I need to cure it before termination occurs! I do not have suitable facilities at home, therefore must rely upon known companies of good repute! My ancillaries are to the best of my knowledge in fine fettle. Do I look to exchange the engine for a recon/remanufactured unit, do I replace with a complete unit from a breaker, or do I have mine rebored?? Finances are tight and these engines aint cheap!! Any suggestions and/or suitable companies would be gratefully received
Any ideas? Other than that we've had virtually no trouble with this car (had it since 9 months old and done 80k in it).
Not an issue for me at present as car is off road for a while. Anyway - you is not alone, so I've listed some previous e-mails as posted to this site. p.s. The concensus would appear to be the battery failure on the siren, Vauxhall test on tech2 should confirm this. In any event - as & when you do sort it - please post a confirmation of fault, as it'll help confirm it in my mind. As follows:- 'I have the same problem with my 2.5 Elite, but the alarm is only triggered when the car is subjected to bright sunlight. I have removed the sensors one by one, and at the moment the only one left is the sensor under the bonnet, so that will be my next job. The two sensors sust behind the front doors I am told are the major problem one, it may be worth removing them and see how you get on.' '2.5td has a timing chain (double) not cambelt. I have found the problem with alarms can tend to be wind getting through the interior vents and if you close them then it doesn't happen. Not too sure about the sunlight!! 'Omega 2.5td estate, I found alarm going off due to backup ni cad battery fault, voltage seemed to change and cause it to go off when I was driving, parked middle of night, basiclly any time but for no apparent reason I put it down to age(6/7 years old)sunlight /heat could also could have this effect. Its located back of servo, took me awile to find it and its a swine to get out/change, battery cost around £90 + from dealer.' 'Thx Spencer, no problems with starting although car is sitting most of the 'Secondly, on the odd occasion we have sunshine, as the sun rises, the alarm 'You're right - apparently the failure of the battery (low voltage or 'Nice thougth - but I have already physically disconnected the interior MY car was only three years old when this problem first started happening, which I reckoned was pretty 'piss poor' for the job required, but as said - still have to confirm this actually is the fault. Good luck
I think you will find it's the sounder backup Battery failing, this is located at the back of the servo under wiper panel, not very easy to get at. As this starts to fail the voltage fluctuates and the alarm thinks its been tampered with. Can go off even when car is running. replace unit (£80>£90 I think) problem solved or remove it but the alarm shows fault when set. Les
