Hi Jimbo
2.5 td engine cooling is a free wheeling viscous coupling mechanical fan related to engine speed and temperature, you can usually hear this cutt-in when pulling hard and steady up a long hill, if you have climate control you have also electric fans on front of the condenser (rad), these run all time the "auto" light is on the climate control. Turn off the air-con and the fans stop, with no aircon on they will remain off unless temp goes above 95c then they should kick in as additional cooling.
Hope this helps
Les

Hi Dr Drek. Glad to hear that the garage sorted out your problem and just as well that the dealer picked up the tab since an ecu is bloody expensive!

I don't know where the outside temperature sensor is exactly, but it is somewhere at the front near the bumper. I have a 1998 CDX 2.0 LPG Omega and I had a problem with the ECU. After Vauxhall re-programmed the ECU the temperature readout slowly increased to 69°C. I tried to blame Vauxhall because they had messed with the ECU, but apparently that isn't possible because the sensor is near the bumper. I spent a couple of hours looking for it but I can't find it anywhere - not even sure what I am looking for. Please let me know if you find it.

Hi,
I've just trawled through this discussion hoping some of it might shed some light on some of the niggles I'm having with my 2.0 16V CDX P reg, just edged over 80K miles. Was wondering if any of the expert incredibly helpful people out there might have some ideas....

1) I've just had the alternator replaced, and all's working great apart from the stereo, which now displays "SAFE" when I turn it on, but does nothing else. The manual says this will happen if the code is entered incorrectly 10 times, but this hasn't happened. Any ideas? The 2 hours commuting I do every day is distinctly dull without tunes. Incidentally, if anyone out there's looking for a car to commute in, you will not find any other car as smooth and comfy as an Omega for so little cash.

2) When the lights are on, the display periodically says "HEADLIGHT TAIL LIGHT", even though there's nothing wrong with them.

3) Starting from cold there's a pronounced rattle from the engine, which dissappears to silky silence after 10 mins driving. Should I be worried? Cambelt was changed about 20K ago.

Thanks in advance for any advice, hope someone can help.

Cheers
Nick

RE:- 2)
I'm not positive if the 2.0litre cars have the suspension sensor that corrects for the load in the car (the MV6 and so I guess Elite's have them fitted), but I know from experience that the mount bracket bolt on the nearside wishbone can break, hence can cause an indication such as this.
On a sillier - but just as relevant point, please don't forget that the rear end has two sets of tail lights (four bulbs). If either of the two inner or outer bulbs are blown - you will get this message, even though it appears as if there are tail lights. Yes it might appear obvious - but that one kept me amused on the wife's MV6 for at least an hour until I did a 'bulb count'.

Re:1
have you tried turning ignition off the holding AS button on stereo then switching on the ignition until you hear a beep the display should now have 4 dashes on it ready for you to enter your code.If you have tried this why not look on ebay for another radio they are going for as little as £10
hope this helps

You will find the outside temperature sensor mounted in the extreme lower edge of the front bumper. If memory serves it will be on the near side of the car. It presses into a hole in the bumper and can be easily pushed out.
Look for the wires!

I have heard that if the front bushes are worn then it can cause some instability when driving over rough uneven surfaces. I've got a Dec 99 2.5 CD and the bushes are still ok but my brother has a Feb 99 2.5 CD Estate & the bushes do need changing onhis. Driving his car over poor potholed road surfaces can cause a clunk from the front end but I can't say it makes the car unstable.

You don't mention mileage, if around 80>100k the clunk could well be from the anti-roll bar tie-bar ball joints common fault and also very annoying (but the cheaper option), just a small amount of play can give a worrying clunk. The lower wishbone bushes(front bush) are prone to fail (more so the heavy 2.5td engine) and will cause rapid heavy wear on the front tyres (usually scrubs them off on the inside edge) so its a good indication that the bush has gone soft/torn and will give you a heavy clunk when driving over pot holes etc. The instability can come when braking on a rough road surface as the worn bush allows the wheel to jatter (front to back) so the steering geometry is changed.

hi they with regard to the front knocking, say over speed bumps try looking at the front suspension arm bushes which are bolted to the cassie? ,Auto vauxs supply complete arm with bushes in stalled for 35.oo per plus delivery and take 20 minutes per side.
I understand that the police change these as a service item on their omegas

Simon.

My brother is going to sort that clunking out. He's been told that it is the bushes but then again it needs a closer inspection to confirm it.

BTW How diffucult is it to change the arm and bushes?

Regards

Hi I had the same problem with my M reg Estate. Had the idler control sensor replaced twice still the same fault. Technician eventually found there was a brake in the wiring from the sensor to the management control unit. 1 hours labour and they replaced the wire and great now.
Hope this helps

Have a 98 2.5td BMW power omega with a little over 100k. lately there had been a knoocking in the engine and I had planned to get it checked out. However it stopped on the road a few days ago and after being firstly towed to the garage and checked out it was discovered that one of the goudgem pins came loos and broke. The cilinder was consiquently damaged and the seals came out in the oil from the sump. Does any body know if this is a fault with diesel omegas? apparently it was a fault with some of the old BMW diesel. Is rebuilding the engine the best opion or should I try and buy a new headblock for the engine?
