Recently there was another intermittent electrical fault. Now I have a rear wiper that doesn't want to work, although the washer does. The wing mirrors have an attitude problem, the off side doesn't work but nearside does occasionally. The latest was the fuel guage did not register the contents. I thought it might be due to the recent hot weather, but once the car was turned off and on again it did work. Next time it didn't appear to register the correct level. Any ideas. Finally, I have been told that the air con compressor has died. What am I realistically going to pay for a recon/new one and how long will labour be. I'd appreciate any help cause we do love the car.
Yesterday when I kicked down there was a loud rushing noise, a lack of acceleration and afterwards a 'ticking' noise when accelerating. It quite happily cruises in top at 70 at the usual 2200 rpm, but the rushing noise is there whenever it changes down on attempts to accelerate. What is wrong with it? I guess something to do with the Turbocharger. I drove it back from North Wales today, a distance of some 250 miles. Is there any danger that I may have done some other damage by continuing to use it?
Was trying to find out peoples average fuel consumptons, on 2.5 TD, 2.6 and 3.0 versions. As i'm going to buy an estate, also what should I look for and avoid fault wise?
Recently bought 2,5 V6 CDX Estate Auto 1997/R 88k. Really pleased after tow problem/jack knife with my old 200Tdi LR Disco. (Steer clear of all high sided 4x4's they don't make as good a tow vehicle as you may think!!) Few probs with Omega: Nearside and now offside front central locks not functioning. About to order 2 used replacement motors at £10. Have stripped old ones but cannot see much wrong. Could it be the central locking control module? ... any advice please Temp. gauge not working. Worried that it may have been disconnected to hide overheat problem. Is sensor or gauge known problem. Where is the sensor for the dash gauge on the engine? ... What action should I take ... no garage bills please!! Auto box is leaking Oil. Is this common? Where are leak points on the box? Which of these can be addressed without removing box? Hope you can help out a penniless newcomer Thanks
lovely car and a lot quicker than my 2.0 gls. problem is that it is fitted with a 4 cd cassette changer and it can be a pig to load! sometimes it loads straight away, but other times it can take twenty or thirty attempts! obviously this can be bloody frustrating! can anybody advise?
Alternatively is there a way of removing the centre cap without the key.
Can anyone suggest where to get one (Vauxhall just tried to sell me a complete set of new bolts with key), alternatively, how do I remove the caps without the key.

the legal limit for td estate is 1600kg (trailer with brakes) but as a rule of thumb its recommended that you do not exceed 85% of the kerb weight (unless you are very experienced) The kerb weight of a 2.5 TDCDX Estate with air con inc the tow equipment is 1786kg (85% = 1518kg) I hope this helps regards Les
For your info i tow a 530/4 Coachman, its 1425 kg, i tow with a new shape 2.5td manual, i cant fault it, 27 mpg while towing!!, (my 98' 2.0L omega did only 19 towing a lighter van). they produce more tq than 2.5 v6, but slightly under 3.0, the advantage is that you don't have to rev the engine like petrol lumps. it sits well on m/way at 60 and will accelerate from this all in fifth! 18oo rpm. Kerb weight of 2.5 cdx estate according to manual is 1769kg, you will be on the the 85% recommended limit. I have put doughnuts in the rear coil springs to assist. The only heavier car is the 5 series 3.0 d beemer at just over 1800kg depending on spec, then your into 4x4 truck stuff. Good luck in finding a good one, (you will need an estate for the weight) it took me a while and found a lot of duff stuff ! Ian

I found after wet weather that water was collecting in the well of the spark plug socket nearest the passenger compartment - the back cylinder or pot 4. Once I had dried this out - remove plug lead and put roll of tissue paper down well with plug still in. It was OK. Problem was it kept coming back, so I changed the plug leads - rubber on them was beginning to rot and the plugs. I also noticed something had come off the air inlet pipe although I couldn't find anything. There is a manufactured hole in this about 2" in diameter. When this hole was blocked it was fine, when it wasn't blocked the car wouldn't run. I filled it with an emergency plastic petrol cap and the car's now running fine. I bought a new air inlet pipe to see how it should be £16 from Vauxhall dealer. The new pipe has an L bendin the manufactured hole, which points towards the back of the car. The L bend is blanked off!!! Seems an unnecessary add on to an unnecessary hole, so I've not fitted it yet. Don't know if I will. Anyway to cut a long story short check the wells your spark plugs go into. You might find they're holding water. Best of Luck Peter Timms
I've got a 98 Omega 2.5 cdx (manual) model with 180k on the clock. It's been absolutely spot on since owning it 160k ago. I've got a few questions about it. 1 - The airbag light has just come on after the passenger raised the seat. I can't see any disconnected wires under the seat. Any ideas? 2 - The central locking on the drivers side doesn't go all the way up to let me open the door sometimes. So i have to go to the effort of using the key! Could this be the central locking motor going ? 3 - 'Coolant level' warning keeps coming up. Coolant level is fine, so i'm assuming the sensor is dirty or on its way out. Where is the sensor ? Is it in the expansion chamber ? 4 - Self Diagnostics. Where can i get a code reader (what type is required ?) and a list of the codes from ? 5 - Can you get the Vauxhall Service Manuals anywhere ? Are the Haynes manuals any good ? Cheers JC
I have a 98 3.0 Elite and I believe that the coolant sensor IS in the expansion tank, mine pops on from time to time, but it is using a small amount of water. Anyway, I know that the coolant has to be well above the cold level on mine for the message to dissapear. And I also know that when its marginal as to weather it needs refilling, a bit of "spirited driving" can cause the coolant to slosh about enough for my "Coolant Level" message to appear and dissapear at random. Not sure on any of the other questions, although I thought Haynes manuals were quite okay
