Danny .

Steer well clear of the K series petrol and early L series diesels .

The engine to have is the Td4 , very reliable and reasonably economical compared to the petrol .

If you are intent on owning one read this forum first , they have many hereditory faults . Window regulators , sunroof guides , water ingression and various transmissions faults . Extensively roadtest the vehicle and listen for any harsh noises / rumbles / clunks from the transmission , this may me an early indication of a IRD fault or rear differential fault . Open the taildoor and check the cubby box in the back isnt filled with water , whilst there feel all the carpets in the area around the rear floor , any wetness can mean big bucks to sort .

Take somone with you who knows these vehicle very well and dont buy the first one you see , most importantly buy one with a good years warranty .

After 6months of working at a landrover dealership, i would urge people to be very careful when buying a freelander, due to the amount of problems that these cars have. Most of them as listed as above but they have problems with oil leaking from the differential, door locks that pack up and tail lights that fill with water. Another common problem is the head gasket seens o many cars come in with this problem, most have new engines put in them.

So if you are considering buying a freelander, i would suggest that you didnt ?

Well I love my Freelander (03 reg) and touch wood not had any major problems, in fact it passed its MOT first time again and I've had it since brand new. Due to me having horses it's a real workhorse, with tack and feed thrown in the back and travelling to various game fairs/horse trials through the year. Just remember there is never a totally reliable car.

No... there's no totally reliable car but Freelanders can be an expensive car to maintain and can require more repairs than average on a bad one in comparison to say... a jap 4x4.
When running properly though they are a good vehicle and much more carlike to drive than some of the bigger models.
Good advice on getting one with an EXTENSIVE WARRANTY !
