paint shop pro or photoshop do trial periods and do this if you scan the pic to your HD. They usually have a video type walkthrough with the prog which shows you how too.

You won't get very far unless you are trained to use the software or willing to spend far too much of your time to learn.

The software you are looking for really is just the 'tool' you still need a skilled operator to restore a photo.

Why not save yourself the time and hassle and have a look for a local photographer / restorer who will do a much better job for you at a reasonable price ;)

Well I taught myself in a matter of hours how to use the software. Theres hundreds of groups and tutorials on the software as well as people willing to help you out, why spend cash doing something you can have fun learning yourself to do and it leads to an interesting hobby where the limits can be endless. I taught myself how to make all the siggy gifs and animations myself instead of having to rely on others! Learning is all part of the experience with computing and IT.

I'm Glad you did, you are obviously a very quick learner.

Takes most people years to master the hundreds of different functions and variables necessary to do a good photo restoration.

hello Andrea
Paint shop pro is a good program to restore old photos with, its great fun too,you can usually find a free trial on one of the free cds they give away with the computer mags, just pop down your local asda or tesco and have a browse on the mags shelf. i got a free copy off a software installation disk i had with a dial up modem, and ive had loads of fun with it,take no notice of that bloke who says go to a professional to alter your photos, theres no point in having a computer if youre not prepared to sit down and have a go,
anyway good luck
bye.
piglen.

Hi

If you don't want to spend money , or not wanting a free trial, there is a program called GIMP, that is supported through opensource.
The GNU Image Manipulation Program

I started with Adobe Photoshop and I have to agree it's blooming hard to get your head around, it's also very rewarding when you start to get good results.
One of my daughters had her picture taken at work, to say she was having a bad face day was putting it mildly, what annoyed me was the 'professionals' did nothing to tidy the pictures up. I'm not saying alter, just remove the great big cold sore would have been enough!
Took me about an hour to sort it out myself and show her at her best.

I used Serif software for this and I find their latest photoplus just as good as Photoshop for my purposes at a 10th of the price.
Serif Photoplus 10 has an auto scratch remover albeit I've never used it as I prefer to do it manually

Thing is though Serif bungle several of their titles together and sell them for pennies, their older versions but otherwise fully functioning so no problems of not being able to print your work like I've found with some 'free' software.

As for cover discs from magazines, is it safe now to use them?
I learnt years ago to use them only for placing a cup on? never ever use the software!

HI Andrea.
Both P S P & serif are good for restoring photos, serif is cheaper than P S P but you do need to sit down & play for an hour or so to be able to get results. I find I can have more control over the cursor by using a tablet rather than the mouse, also magnify the part of the image you are working on & don't forget to save as you progess.

Pete.I am 79 & only started to play with PCs ehen I lost my wife.
