Hi Andrea

It sounds as if you havea case of the nasties. There are 2 things that will stop paint sticking, one is dust and the other is some form of grease. The best way to find out what the problem is is to do a couple of small test panels where they are not seen. The way to get rid of the dust and grease is to give the wall a wash with sugar soap. Remember to wear rubber gloves as it can do weird things to your skin.

When the wall is dry paint some pva glue (watered down to 4:1) over an affected area, leave to dry then hit it with some paint. this should take care of any dust that is on the wall. Try this first as it is the cheapest method

The way to stop grease marks causing bubbles and stains is to wash the wall as before and leave to dry. Now you can try a little bit of oil based undercoat. Once that is dry slap some of your paint on it.

With regards to using Dulux paint you are waisting your money. All the paint that we use in Britian is produced by Azko Nobel and all they do is stick different labels on it, from your cheap B&Q crap to Crown and Dulux. Try going to a trade centre and asking for a high opacity emulsion or trade emulsion or try using acrylic eggshell instead of emulsion it costs about a third more but lasts 3 times as long with the added bonus that you can scrub it to get the dirty marks off without taking the paint off.

I have just had a thought! Did you use a steamer to take old wallpaper off prior to trying to paint the walls?

Thanks for taking the time in replying to my problem.I have bought sugar soap and the pva glue i will be doing it tomorrow. I have never had wallpaper on the hallway walls i always painted on it as it would cost me a lot of money as my house has 4 landings.

Hi, thanks for that tip, about the PVA glue. I live in an oldish house, former farm cottage and my utility suffers with the bubble problem, even after scrubbing with sugar soap. It needs doing again but have been putting it off as the finish is awful, so will try that, thanks.

I use vinyl silk, B&Q own make, with kids, dogs, cats and husband, I am constantly wiping off marks and it stands up to this really well. Its not like the shiny stuff your granny used to use anymore, but it does still have a slight sheen, but, this just helps to blend any lumps and bumps in the wall surface.

I have tried the sugar soap and pva glue and it hasn't worked on my walls. Any other suggestions would be appreciated.

Hi Andrea

Sorry it didn't work for you. To be honest without seeing the problem it is hard to find a cure. If you can send me a couple of digital photos of the problem I will have a better idea of the problem. You can send them to [Log in to view email] and I'll get back to you as soon as I can.

I got fed up so left it till now. Found a solution by sanding the whole walls down first then painting a thin coat of primer leaving it 24hours then painting on the colour i am using. Did it with a few patches and it worked. Leave the sanding to my boyfriend but he is always working so my walls are not done yet. I hate having to wait for things to be done seems like i am going to be waiting forever.
