fireworks coming from the exhaust!

As soon as I came out, the car kangarooed up the road, lost power, chugged and cut out. It started again and I managed to limp the mile towards home. It lost power even with my foot on the accelerator and so I ended up in 1st gear. It suddenly backfired and what looked like red hot lumps of coal spewed out behind me! Then it stalled. I locked it and left it - away from houses etc - I thought a full tank of fuel would make a loud bang! I rang Asda to see if there was a problem with their fuel - still waiting on that - but my friend mentioned baffles. And yes, I definitely put unleaded and not diesel in!!! Any ideas???? Ta
As to why it's done it in the first place is another question though usually a misfire or excessive over fueling will destroy a catylyst. ___________________ THERE'S NO REPLACEMENT FOR DISPLACEMENT !
To date I have had a new rotor arm and a new exhaust fitted (with cat). It would be lovely to say it had fixed the problem..... now the car runs OK when cold, if missing slightly. I can drive to the supermarket about a mile away and it's OK. When I get back in it, the blasted thing misfires badly, has lack of power, kangaroos and is a total pain! It almost feels like the automatic choke is sticking but I suppose it could be anything!!! I couldn't even drive it this beautiful weekend with the hood off because I can't trust it!
I think you will need to get the car to a garage or get it checked by a mechanic now. The problems you have could destroy the new cat quickly. It is possibly the coolant temperature sensor or maybe the timing has slipped. There are unfortunately too many possibilities to guess. Someone with diagnostic equipment should be able to sort it. Hope all goes well. MikeF.
Thanks for that - the car is at this moment being checked by a mechanic. He's taking it in somewhere to "plug in" to see what's what. Because the car's getting on, it's got to the point whereby you have to see if it's cost effective to do it or to move on, cut your losses and buy another car. I've enjoyed having the car, it's been fun, so I'll be sorry to see it go.
I don't like to speak too soon but .... she seems to be OK now. I would like to say a huge "Thank you" to you all for your help and advice because without it, I would still be in the same boat. What was it? Well... nobody seemed to know so I printed off your replies to me and took it to the little garage down the road (not worth spending too much on it, I thought!). He usually just grins if I say what I think may be the matter but he listened very closely. He had it for a week and a half before ringing me. Apparently it WAS a build of voltage but it had to have a DEALER rotor arm, coil and distributor. If it had the cheaper parts, the ECU was messed up and so would continue to misbehave. He couldn't believe it himself, but it had worked. It cost £100 so I am now happily tootling around the countryside again....until the next time! Thanks again Jane
