My wife has a 1998 1.4 petrol Escort which has recently started to lose power/acceleration. This is particularly noticeable on the motorway and the car now struggles to maintain 70mph where before it was comfortable at 85-90mph. This has been combined with an overwhelming smell of fuel within the car although there are no leaks when the car had been stood?? Could this be a blocked fuel filter??

its the smell of petol that concerns me thats either a leak or unburned fuel , cannot see a blocked fuel filter causing that when was the last time the air filter was changed either way two new filters wont cost you the eath and then take it from there have you checked for leaks when its ticking over

Not been serviced or changed since we've had it which is probably over 3 years?? No obvious leaks that I can see and the smell does go away, its just whenever its initially started for about the first 5-10 mins of driving?? Thanks for the advice!!!

Its been resolved. The catalytic converter was knackered hence the smell of fuel and lack of power. Its now been changed and the car is running just fine again.
