I am a new diy'er, ex used to do it all. I am trying to put brackets for a venetian blind above my bathroom window. I have a drill with hammer action and have drilled the starts of holes in three different positions in the wall trying to miss the solid beam that goes over the window, with no luck. I get about 10cms in at the most, what am I doing wrong? All directions must be really simple please, im not simple, well maybe a bit, but I really want to be able to do the little things, to prove to myself that im not as stupid and usless as I have been lead to beleive for the last 25yrs.

If your hiting the concrete lintel above the window most hammer drills won't touch it.

Pop down your local tool hire and hire an SDS Drill and suitable size bit. These drill's will go through pretty much anything. Make sure you get the right size drill bit (for your wall plugs) because they fit differently from a standard drill bit and chuck.
