It depends on what kind of confirmation that your vet uses or prefers. My vet recommended an ultra sound over palputation. I believe that the most commonly used method is ultrasound. This can be used after 28 days, but may not be able to predict accurately how many puppies there are. Ultrasound examinations are comfortable because they are non invasive and very reliable. Feeling the abdomen from about 21 days can be accurate, but it may be difficult if the dog is nervous or slightly overweight (not that Angel is ;0). If pregnant, the vet will feel a thickening of the uterus and "bumps" within. It isn't fool-proof, however, especially if there is just one pup in the womb or if the pregnancy is not as advanced as first thought. From approximately 21-25 days endocrinological tests detect relaxin, a hormone exclusively produced by pregnant dogs. The puppy's heart beats can be detected after about 25 days using a stethoscope or ECG. However it will be very difficult to determine how many puppies there are. An x-ray will pick up the skeletons of the puppies from around 49 days. It should also be accurate in determining how many there are. At the same time, most vets prefer not to use this method, as there is a danger that the radiation might cause damage. Keep my fingers crossed for you x
hehe well shes deffo not overweight but she can be a little nervous but she usually just stands there staring at me as if shes asking why a strange man is sticking his fingers up her bottom LOL ___________________ my sunshine doesnt come from the sun in the skies it comes from the love in my dogs eyes x
If an inexperienced person palputates the abdomen then yes there is a chance of fetal loss. This method is not always possible in larger dogs (again not the case for you lovely little Angel ;0) Or if the dog is large chested and likely to carry under rib cage. X rays are not widely used in th UK for pregnancy confirmation (more in the US I believe) because there is a risk of damage from the x rays radiation (Same as young children, hospitals will not X ray them under a certain age and use an ultrasound as it is a much safer method). Ultra sounds are normally the recommended method of pregnancy confirmation (Same as we have to check for fetal abnormalities during pregnancy) and is accurate after 28 days. The blood tests I believe test for a hormone relaxin that is only released when an embryo has ben implanted however this can give a flase result if there is a small litter of pups of 3 and under. As Angel has only been mated once this season ( as Mia was) it would be easy to work out her due date. You could wait if you are unconvinced about the confirmation methods and look for signs of pregnancy however for the first three weeks or so of pregnancy, you may not notice any changes in Angel. Some females will become more demanding for attention, their nipples may enlarge slightly, and some may become hungrier. These are not a guarantee of a pregnancy, but are good signs. A good indication is a increase in vaginal discharge. Bitches can show the same signs during 'false pregnancy,' a hormonal abnormality, which may occur after a bitch has been in heat. So may be an issue if Angel has ever had a phantom pregnancy... As symptoms will be virtually the same. And as for Angel being a little nervous I think we all would be in that situation LOL poor girl!!!
yeh id rather get it confirmed by a vet because angel has had a phantom pregnancy on both her previous seasons. she gets so upset with it aswell she tries to mother teddy bears.. when we brought bindi home angel wasnt even having a false pregnancy and she lay down on the floor and tried to let bindi suckle it was so cute but it was upsetting because she seemed so distressed. yep IF she is pregnant her due date is the 12.10.08 thanks for all the info then i think im more likely to go for the ultrasound by the sounds of it. because although my vet is genuinly a good vet i think just to be safe maybe not have her palpated..
He was 398 grams at birth and now weighs in at 598 grams he is snoozing after his breakfast this morning!!!!!!
thats a good price for a scan i will probs use my most local vet dor that coz dont think the clinic i go to will have it :) ___________________ my sunshine doesnt come from the sun in the skies it comes from the love in my dogs eyes x

Mia does not have hers removed, although it is breed standard. She split one of her dew claws not that long ago and it bled and bled (poor girl). I spoke with the vet about them being removed and he thought it woud definately be for the benefit of the pups as they quite often cause problems later on in his opinion and it is obviously much more difficult to deal with when they are older. The pups had them done at 4 days old, (yesterday) they did not yelp or show any signs of discomfort
The rest of the foot looks fine so keeping fingers crossed it will heal ok. The pup himself is eating well and it doesnt seem to bother him. If we cant sell him because he only has 3 toes then we will keep him ourselves. Have taken loads of pics but cant upload them, will get OH to put them on for me asap.
