hi so your having your first litter, wonderful, i have this advice !!!!!!
i have been breeding for 47 years and still i am amazed how each welping are different from the last each bitch has her own little quirks that make them special, when i first whelped my first bitch i was 11 and was petrified as dad was working away at the time she decided to whelp early and i was told over the phone get on with it, and ginnie had a total of 9 pups, and that was a litter of boxers too, ginnie decided she would whelp on her back, yes on her back lay out full stretch on her back,
since then i have had bitches that stoop, stand, bury their there head and a couple that would only welp when covered with ripped up paper,
so dont worry your bitch will do her own thing that is special to her,
i sometimes have peoples new babies to hand rear, and found i could only get whelpi from my vets, make sure to get your puppy milk way before your bitch is due to welp,

my advice is dont be to eager to feed the babies yourself, as each baby is born latch them on to her, keep a nice warm basket waiting for them to arrive when the 2nd puppy arrives put the 1st baby into the basket and so on, you said you had had her scanned well just because the vet said 4 or 5 there could be more i have had bitches scanned been told 3 and ended up with 6, make sure that she delivers the same amount of afterbirths to puppies, it is ok for her to eat the afterbirths but just let her eat a couple as too many will give her the runs and that is the last thing you want as it can affect the milk flow, now exercise dont not now as you can induce labour let her do what she wants when she wants she knows just how much and when, it can take hours in between puppies so try not to clock watch, my thoughts are if she's pushing and i mean meaningfull pushing, dont worry if she's been pushing for more than 1 to 2 hours then call the vet if your not sure call the vet, make sure you have sum kitchen scales and paper and pen handy as you can weigh each puppy as it arrives and make sure to put down the time it was born, hope you have a great whelping, and DON'T WORRY sandra

How can you tell which pup is which if they look similar? I know my neighbours have even changed colour at a week old, so its even harder to tell who is who! lol Any advice on that one?

We were recommended to put numbers on the tummies of our ladys litter, but as some are being chosen now, it seems a bit odd to keep numbers on them for 3 weeks or so, so we went out and bought 8 cat collars :)

2 of each colour (we had 4 boys and 4 girls) so its easy to identify who has chosen which puppy. Our first girl was chosen tonight and is wearing a lovely red collar.

good luck with everything, puppies are very hard work but it is so rewarding, I know I will cry the day we wave them goodbye :(

Ah good idea! I have seen the identity tags, but wondered how long they would stay on really? I think my dog would chew them off! lol
The collars are a good idea though, but i think mine will be too small when they arrive. Will just have to wait and see!

Roxy, our bitch did get a little off her food coming to the end, rather than eating alot in one go, we kept puppy food constantly by her bed so she could nibble when she wanted.

Mum ate the cords on all the pups except the one that was in trouble. We did that one after he was revived. (I have to say, you cannot tell at all which one it was that had the battle, they are all thriving)

If you would like to see how they are doing, I've been putting pics online http://www.flickr.com/photos/28634252@N02/ so folks can see their progress.

I am sure you will do brilliantly for your girl. It is a little less traumatic than I was expecting it to be :)

For the milk, get it from your vets, and they can advise you if you have any questions.

Our vets know my voice when i call them now lol!!!

We are using puppy milk made by royal canin, and they love it. They almost try to bath in it at feeding time now :)

Don't worry about afterbirths, its different for dogs than for us humans.

If you don't get the same number of afterbirths as pups, don't panic!! It isn't harmful for dogs, so really don't stress out about them.

Roxy was eating them so fast we couldnt have kept count of them lol.

animals are such an inspiration i just thought up of that coz bindi is ripping up paper lol

If you go for cat collars at first, as well as fitting better, you can make sure they have the stretchy bit, so if the puppy gets caught up the collar will just slip off.

It was quiet emotional when her new mummy and daddy chose her. She is the first of "my" babies to be named, and the day to wave them off is getting closer far too quickly.

Jinnie,
They are beautiful ;0) So glad that the one you cleverly revived is doing as well as his litter mates!! ( have been reading up on puppy cpr just in case)

Can't believe 3 days till due date it has flown by!!!!!

Mia has been a picky eater all throughout her pregnancy, The only thing that she is gteed to eat at the moment is minced beef!!!!!

first she went off her dry complete puppy food, so we bought puppy meat.... She enjoyed that for a while, then she would eat a combination of the two if covered in chicken soup!!!!!
Now unless its been cooked by mommy or daddy she noses it around gives a hugh sigh and goes to lie down in her whelping box LOL

I do leave some complete puppy food out for her to have a nibble if she wants!!!!!!

She is definately eating better food than anyone else in the house ;0)

Oh jinnie!!!

I can only imagine how emotional it must be when some one picks one of your babies..... Are you going to keep one or are they all to be rehomed?

I have some of those id bands for the pups, although understand where you are coming from can't see them staying on for very long!!!!
