Can anyone tell me when does a car become a classic, what constitutes a classic car? Is it the age of the car, what happens about road tax and insurance?

beleive its been cut off as such now. Think pre 76 for road tax. Insurance have their own rules depending on the company. Think its 25 years as a general classification. Sometimes it just depends how many are left. Go ON DVLA SITE TO FIND OUT ABOUT ROAD TAX. SHOULD tell you their for sure. If its for insurance your have to ring round.

hi

the 'Free' road tax is only applicable to vehicles manufactured before 1st Jan 1973.

Ie half way through the 'L' reg suffix.

Classic car status is ambigous....... there are a lot of suggested definitions. (see the Practicl Classics Magazine letters pages, they have been trying to determine this for the last 25 years!)

It would be hard to put an age on a classic,
some say pre 73 because of the tax, others because there is an owners club, there are also moden classics, some manufacturers where there entire production could be concidered as classics (Morgan, Bristol etc)
More moden mass produced cars would include the GM Calibra, Ford Cougar, Jaguar S type and even the Hyundai Coupe is destained to enter this class aswell as the MB SLK .

lots to think about here

Al

Hi thanks to everyone who replied. Dvla states that there is no tax exemption on cars over 25 years, the car must have been regisered before 01/01/1973 and is then classed as a historic car and is exemt from road tax. Never mind our George, (my wife calls him that) is a classic to us at 19 years of age.

Al is right, anything from about feb 1973 on is taxable, before that the tax is free although you still have to apply for and actually display a tax disc on your windscreen but it says "NIL" on it on the amount part.
I reckon this year thing should be moved forward at least say about ....1980 -82 ish
Anyway AL A JAGUAR S TYPE !!! a classic, jeez thats a scary thought !

Just noticed this post as was away for a few days twice.
I had a wedge many years ago and the boot in it was cavernous and it was very good on fuel considering the size of the car.
Yep a piece of cheese got me about for a few months.
There's also a maxi club as well for all these lunatics/ahem enthusiasts lol !
