Hi folkes,

I would be very grateful for some advice. I’ve recently bought a 306 1.4L 2001 Y reg. Last night as i was returning home my engine oil pressure light came on as well as the STOP light. Soon after I stopped and checked the oil level which was fine (actually slightly above maximum). I cautiously drove home driving as slow as possible with as little revs I could get away with.

When I got home and looked under the bonnet, I rechecked the oil after 30 mins and the level was still the same. However the engine was making a rattling noise as if oil wasn’t getting around (back of the engine). I also discovered very small metal particles in the oil on the dipstick!! The fan belt was okay, nothing under the oil cap. But i do remember hearing a squelling noise the last 2 days whilst driving unrelated to braking. The car had an oil change before i bought the car from a garage on saturday.

Has the oil pump failed? And has me driving it back home damaged the engine?

PLEASE HELP

Regards

Shalu

You need to check the pressure with an oil pressure gauge, but it can be may things, oil pump, main bearings, big end bearings, blocked oil pick up pipe, blocked oil filter, and many other things, good luck

Hi, Thanks for replying.

I decided to first do an engine flush and oil/filter change and found that the oil filter was totally clogged. When i bought the car a few days ago the garage said they serviced the car (looks like the stamp in the book was just for show). Anyway, i didn't have the correct filter last night so i started the car without one to see if the oil pressure light went off. It's still there! Either the problem is still there or having no filter could be causing low oil pressure. Does anyone know?

thanks

You will not get any pressure with the oil filter off!! put a new one on and try it, if you say it is clogged, this may well be your problem, just hope it has not starved any major components of oil!!

Hi,

Changed the oil and filter but warning lights still on! I started the engine last night and it sounded okay to begin with but and after warming it up it started to make an additional knocking sound from the back of the engine which got worse as i gave it some revs. Could this be damage done to the bearings. Or could it be that the engine components are still being starved of oil. My next step is to see if the oil pump is working or any pipes are blocked.

wish me luck.

Hi, as you have only just bought the car from a garage, I don't understand why you are trying to fix it. it was obviously faulty when they sold it to you, so take it straight back and demand a refund.

any metal particles are a clear sign of engine damage. If you still have the filter, keep it as evidence of the condition of the car.

if the garage refuse to give you your money back, get trading standards involved.

Hi,

I did contact the garage but they said as i didn't take out an additional warranty on the car when i bought it, there was nothing that they could do.

that's rubbish. the car has to be fit for purpose, regardless of not having a warranty. also, they have obviously lied about the servicing being done.

you will need to be firm with these cowboys, tell them that unless they give you a full refund that you will get trading standards involved.

you will probably get some resistance to this idea, but carry out the threat if necessary, and i'm sure that you will win in the end..

a car is obviously supposed to last a lot longer than two days. consumer law is based on what can reasonably be expected of a purchase, given it's age and cost etc.
in my view, you have a clear case for a full refund, whatever the dealer says. I also doubt that the car was "fine" when you bought it, if the filter is as bad as you describe.
I can only repeat my previous advice to demand a full refund, and get trading standards involved if they refuse. they are clearly dodgy in my view, and deserve all they get! good luck.

Hi,

Oil pump was blocked, now cleared. Engine runs fine with no noises. Looks like there hasn't been any damage. Phew!

Many thanks for your replies.
