I know hedgehogs aren't pets but i don't know where else to post bout them but i've got a family of them that live in our and next door neiboughs gardens. first time i saw one it had to be put to sleep cos of damaged jaw, second time i got to feed it, picked up a slug and put it next to the hedgehogs head, it turned and ate it. major cheer-up for me after first hedgehogs missfortunes. does any one else know if they have hedgehogs in their gardens?

kitty, if its your pond the fall in then you can put a shallow end or bridge in that hedgehogs will be able to climb out by. they can swim well and will find a way out if there is one available but if not thats when they drown from been too tired, thats why i'm really happy my mums pond has a 'wall' round the pond so hedgehogs can't reach the water to fall in.

We regularly get the spikey visitors :)Drives our dogs nuts tho! We think they come into the alley as we always have dried food for the dogs to snack on :) If we let the dogs out in the night, and they start barking madly, we know the hedgehogs have come for a snack and quickly grab the dogs in. Our daughter loves them to bits :)

We have something which comes into our garden at night - the dogs trail it's scent in circles around the garden next morning, but as of yet we havent seen it. Im assuming its a hedgepig! lol We used to have a family of them when we were kids, would feed them catfood. They made such a snuffly/snorty racket when they were trundling up and down the garden to the food! Very cute though.

i'm now looking to either buy a cheap / make a hedgehog house, i've seen some plans for them but i relly need help finding where i can buy either the flat pack houses or the 'thin' wood sheets and water proof insulting stuff to cover it in. if any one knows where i can get the matterials then that would help too as well as any reports of having seen any hedgehogs in your gardens.

ticks can be a problem.. but please people remember that these are wild animals and shouldnt be handled unless really necessary.

hi, just reading this, brought back some great memories. We had a whole family living in our porch/falling down conservatory thing! on the farm, they poo and pee everywhere and the fleas were a big problem. My cats used to get fed out there and had access to the house via a top window and access outside - door didn't shut properly, the hedgehogs made a great den under the shelf where the cats ate so always had food on tap - messy cats, mine nested in winter and as most were underweight we could keep an eye on them, they all survived the winter, but like I said, the fleas were a problem, as much as I loved having winter guests we left them alone, putting out food/water that they could access themselves (rang the local hedgehog rescue for advice) and come the following spring they went on their way, healthy and fat, they are wild and handling them isn't such a good thing if you are planning to allow them to go back to the wild. Have fun though, they are really cute.

petpotty, i only picked up these two to check they looked ok and didn't need taking to the vets, first one i saw had a crushed lower jaw and had to be put down to stop it suffering. after that i want to be sure that they are still healthy so i just have a look at them and return them to the garden after. i always wear gloves incase of fleas and tics (and cos spins so sharp). i'm want to put up hedgehog 'hotels' when i get them bought / made then i might try to find out if any flea powder safe for use with them from the vets and put a little on in the winter while they hibernate. i've read on some websites you can use some flea powders on them and it doesn't disturb their sleep. gonna do a whole lot more research on how i can help them (even though i recognise they are wild) first though. i've started putting out dog food and a bowl of water and either the hedgehogs or local cats have eaten it after midnight.
