I've had this checked out by a mechanic who insists there is no connection between the mechanical handbrake which acts on the rear wheel drums and the hydraulic system that operates the front and rear discs. The brake fluid level sensor was replaced to eliminate false indication. But the "low brake fluid" warning still comes on whenever the handbrake is applied sometimes accompanied by the handbrake light flashing on and off. Any ideas anyone?

The parking brake light and the low brake fluid circuit are on the same loom, the reason for the fault is because the handbrake switch is the same part as they use for a Peugeot 306 boot light switch and isn't man enough for the job, you will need to remover the centre console and replace the switch as the old one gets high resistance the good news is that its only around £5 the bad news is that is awkward to get to. But this will fix it.

Thanks very much for the info and I'm glad I found out about it now as the "awkward bit" can be sorted out by the company who supplied it as it is still under warranty.aj.
