If left for more than 2 days it is difficult to start from cold. It will fire once then I have to leave it for 15 mins or so before trying again. Sometimes it will start then or I will have to wait another 15 mins. If the battery goes flat it will start after I charge it up. I have tried the priming pump before attempting a start but it makes no difference. I can't see any leaks from the fuel lines. Glow plugs were replaced 2000 miles ago. I have owned the van for 7 years and only had to replace the glow plugs twice. It has 147,000 on the clock. I intend to run it on biodiesel when this problem is sorted, are these engines ok on that? Not sure what make the pump is but it is made in Germany and I think the type is XUD 201.

as for running on bio fuel look on here http://www.dieselbob.co.uk/index.asp and ask the question its free and they have a very good reputation, as for the motor not starting are you sure the battery is ok i say this as my focus 18tdci had much the same problem if it did not catch first time it was a sod to start often the battery flattening i checked it myself and it came up ok then 2 other friends checked it and the same result in the end i got a new battery and its been fine since then although there are many other things that can effect poor starting the relay that controls the length of time the glow plugs stay on but in summer this should not effect starting . injectors not atomising the fuel and various other reasons

Hi You may want to check injector pump outlet pressure AND fuel pump pressure, both of these faults, or a combination of both could cause problems. regards John

Thanks for the advice, I'll see if my usual repair man can check the pressures.
