Citroen Synergie not starting

I have a Citroen Synergie 1.9 turbo diesel, P reg, with over 180,000 miles on the clock. It's a great car apart from an intermittent starting problem. I can get around it by pumping the fuel through by hand, using the bladder in the engine compartment. At first this would solve the problem with one go, but now I have to pump several times before the car starts, in a cloud of black smoke! The problem doesn't happen all the time and there's no clear pattern. Sometimes it won't start after a long run; at others when it's been sat a while after driving locally. The garage swapped the fuel filter but that didn't help. Does anyone have any experience of this problem by any chance? Thabks in advance for your help! PETE
