I bought my very first car second hand with a 12 month MOT and everything was fine.
Recently it has started kicking when I accelerate in first and second. I'm worried the gearbox is on its way out...anythoughts.

I think that you would need to be more exact with your description of the problem, as it would be difficult to diagnose from what you have said. any noises? what exactly does it feel like, and what area of the car do you think it's coming from?

Thank you very much for replying I'll do my best to describe it.
The engine is quite noisy with a slight whine.
Every few seconds it feels like the car jumps, jerking it (and me) forward.
I'm worried it could be the gear box as it's also occasionally difficult to find third and it is always difficult to get reverse.

could the engine be noisy becouse it's revving a lot? i was just thinking that if the clutch was slipping, the engine revs would increase without the car going any faster. the clutch could 'grab' suddenly, causing the lurch that you're getting.
you could check how god the clutch is by pulling the handbrake up, and trying to pull away in 1st gear. if the clutch is ok, the engine should stall, but if it's worn, the clutch will probably just slip.

second that. If it doesnt stall BUT the front wheels are spinning you will smell, a sweet smell, burning rubber however if the clutch starts burning that a horrid smell.
